"Level of Analysis" and "Unit of Analysis": A case for distinction

2008-12-01
Yurdusev, Nuri
This paper takes the view that the 'level of analysis' problem, first posed by J.D. Singer (1961), has not been discussed to the extent that it deserves in the literature of International Relations. The concepts of the 'level of analysis' and the 'unit of analysis' have widely been used interchangeably. The author attempts to make a distinction between the 'level of analysis' and the 'unit of analysis', arguing that the 'level of analysis' is an issue of how to study (methodology and context) and the, unit of analysis' is one of what to study (actor and object). It is suggested that, although a distinction is possible and necessary between those issues, they cannot completely be separated. They are actually linked to each other through the idea of the whole.

Estimation and hypothesis testing in stochastic regression
Sazak, Hakan Savaş; Tiku, Moti Lal; İslam, Qamarul; Department of Statistics (2003)
Regression analysis is very popular among researchers in various fields but almost all the researchers use the classical methods which assume that X is nonstochastic and the error is normally distributed. However, in real life problems, X is generally stochastic and error can be nonnormal. Maximum likelihood (ML) estimation technique which is known to have optimal features, is very problematic in situations when the distribution of X (marginal part) or error (conditional part) is nonnormal. Modified maximum...
Basis in nuclear Frechet spaces
Erkurşun, Nazife; Nurlu, Mehmet Zafer; Department of Mathematics (2006)
Existence of basis in locally convex space has been an important problem in functional analysis for more than 40 years. In this thesis the conditions for the existence of basis are examined. These thesis consist of three parts. The first part is about the exterior interpolative conditions. The second part deals with the inner interpolative conditions on nuclear frechet space. These are sufficient conditions on existence of basis. In the last part, it is shown that for a regular nuclear Köthe space the inner...
Multiresolution analysis of S&P500 time series
KILIC, Deniz Kenan; Uğur, Ömür (2018-01-01)
Time series analysis is an essential research area for those who are dealing with scientific and engineering problems. The main objective, in general, is to understand the underlying characteristics of selected time series by using the time as well as the frequency domain analysis. Then one can make a prediction for desired system to forecast ahead from the past observations. Time series modeling, frequency domain and some other descriptive statistical data analyses are the primary subjects of this study: i...
Sturmian comparison theory for linear and half-linear impulsive differential equations
Ozbekler, A.; Zafer, Ağacık (Elsevier BV, 2005-11-30)
In this paper, we investigate Sturmian comparison theory for second-order half-linear differential equations with fixed moments of impulse actions. It is shown that impulse actions may greatly change the behavior of solutions in comparison. Several oscillation criteria are also derived to illustrate the results.
Parameter optimization of chemically activated mortaars containing high volumes of pozzolan by statistical design and analysis of experiments
Aldemir, Başak; Saatçioğlu, Ömer; Department of Industrial Engineering (2006)
This thesis illustrates parameter optimization of early and late compressive strengths of chemically activated mortars containing high volumes of pozzolan by statistical design and analysis of experiments. Four dominant parameters in chemical activation of natural pozzolans are chosen for the research, which are natural pozzolan replacement, amount of pozzolan passing 45 æm sieve, activator dosage and activator type. Response surface methodology has been employed in statistical design and analysis of experi...
