DEVELOPMENT IN WEDGE SHEAR TESTING OF UNSATURATED CLAYS AND GRAVELS

1991-03-01
MIRATA, T
Means for measuring the shear strength at large strains in the wedge shear test over about the same range of normal stresses as at peak strength are described. By the same means it is now possible to prolong the test for larger shear displacements when loading is near-vertical; to perform a reshear test on cut planes; to obtain a strength envelope using a single test mould; and to perform a multi-stage shear test if desired. A double-cut, cylindrical test mould is described which enables clays or fine gravels to be sheared, in the same moulds in which they have been compacted, along planes relevant to the slope stability of embankments. A sufficiently accurate shear strength envelope can be obtained from two such cylindrical wedge shear tests (cylwests) which can be performed within 1 h. A larger version of this set-up, using a portable frame and a prismatic box cut to provide a shear plane area of 900 cm2 as in the in situ wedge shear test (iswest), is also described. This version (priswest) has been used successfully for testing gravels and clays with particles up to 38mm. The results of priswests on 5mm-10mm gravel agree closely with those drained triaxial tests on the same material.

Effect of near-fault ground motion and damper characteristics on the seismic performance of chevron braced steel frames
Dicleli, Murat (Wiley, 2007-06-01)
This study is aimed at comparing the seismic performance of steel chevron braced frames (CBFs) with and without fluid viscous dampers (FVDs) as a function of the characteristics of the near-fault (NF) ground motion and FVD parameters. For this purpose, comparative nonlinear time history (NLTH) analyses of single and multiple storey CBFs with and without FVDs are conducted using NF ground motions with various velocity pulse periods scaled to have small, moderate and large intensities. Additionally, NLTH anal...
Comparison of suction and oedometer methods for the measurement of swell pressure
Cokca, E (Geological Society of London, 2000-05-01)
In this paper, a thermocouple psychrometric technique is used to measure soil suction and assess the reliability of a swell pressure prediction method. Kaolinite-bentonite clay mixtures were prepared to obtain expansive soils with a wide range of plasticities. Suction measurements using thermocouple psychrometers and constant volume swell tests in oedometers were made on statically compacted :specimens. Soil suction-water content relationships were evaluated. The results indicate a linear relationship betwe...
Seismic energy dissipation in deteriorating systems through low-cycle fatigue
Erberik, Murat Altuğ; Sucuoğlu, Haluk (Wiley, 2004-01-01)
Energy dissipation characteristics of structural members which exhibit both strength and stiffness deterioration under imposed displacement reversals are investigated. In the experimental part, 17 reinforced concrete beam specimens were tested under constant and variable amplitude inelastic displacement cycles. The constant-amplitude tests were employed to determine the low-cycle fatigue behaviour of specimens where the imposed displacement amplitude was the major variable. A two-parameter fatigue model was...
A numerical study on response factors for steel wall-frame systems
Arslan, Hakan; Topkaya, Cem (Wiley, 2010-11-01)
A numerical investigation was undertaken to evaluate the response of dual structural systems that consisting of steel plate shear walls and moment-resisting frames. The primary objective of the study was to investigate the influence of elastic base shear distribution between the wall and the frame on the global system response. A total of 10 walls and 30 wall frame systems, ranging from 3 to 15 stories, were selected for numerical assessment. These systems represent cases in which the elastic base shear res...
Evaluation of displacement coefficient method for seismically retrofitted buildings with various ductility capacities
Dicleli, Murat (Wiley, 2014-07-25)
This research study is aimed at evaluating the accuracy of the displacement coefficient method (DCM) of FEMA 440 and associated nonlinear static procedure (NLSP) for actual buildings with soft story mechanism and various ductility capacities. The DCM and associated NLSP are evaluated using two existing seismically vulnerable buildings with soft story mechanism. The buildings are first retrofitted using a ductile steel-brace-link system to represent those with good ductility capacity and then retrofitted wit...
