Air quality impacts of electricity use in domestic heating: A comparative study for Ankara

In this study, existing air quality affects of current domestic heating systems in comparison to the electricity use alternative in Ankara have been analysed. For the winter season 1991-1992 heat energy used in Ankara for domestic heating has been calculated. For the hypothetical case of electricity use instead of the current domestic heating systems in the city, Industrial Source Complex - Short Term dispersion model has been used for six site alternatives and for two different thermal power plant technology, as 12 scenarios, having different emission characteristics in order to estimate ground level concentrations of SO2, NOx and SPM. The simulation results showed that even the most unreasonable hypothetical site selection alternative i.e., a thermal power plant located within the city, pollutant concentrations would have been much lower compared to the current state. A simplistic economical analysis has also been included.

Local air quality impacts due to downwash around thermal power plants: Numerical simulations of the effect of building orientation
Kayın, Serpil; Tuncel, Süleyman Gürdal; Yurteri, Coşkun (1999-09-01)
One of the primary adverse environmental impacts associated with power generation facilities and in particular thermal power plants is local air quality. When these plants are operated at inland areas the dry type cooling towers used may significantly increase ambient concentrations of air pollutants due to the building downwash effect. When one or more buildings in the vicinity of a point source interrupt wind flow, an area of turbulence known as a building wake is created. Pollutants emitted from relative...
Air pollution forecasting in Ankara, Turkey using air pollution index and its relation to assimilative capacity of the atmosphere
genç, Deniz; Yesilyurt, Canan; Tuncel, Süleyman Gürdal (2010-07-01)
Spatial and temporal variations in concentrations of CO, NO, NO2, SO2, and PM10, measured between 1999 and 2000, at traffic-impacted and residential stations in Ankara were investigated. Air quality in residential areas was found to be influenced by traffic activities in the city. Pollutant ratios were proven to be reliable tracers to differentiate between different sources. Air pollution index (API) of the whole city was calculated to evaluate the level of air quality in Ankara. Multiple linear regression ...
Assessment of indoor air quality in crowded educational spaces
Betuz, Naima Ebru; Elias Özkan, Soofia Tahira; Department of Building Science in Architecture (2012)
Indoor air quality has become a challenge together with the global aim ‘decreasing energy consumption’. Increasing insulation levels of building envelopes but implementing inaccurate building system details has caused excessive heat, accumulation of pollutants, etc. in spaces. In terms of educational spaces, the increase in complaints and illnesses due to unfavorable indoor air conditions leads to a decrease in concentration and so academic performance of students and staff. In the context, the aim of the s...
Solar domestic water heating in Turkey
Akınoğlu, Bülent Gültekin; Ecevit, A (1999-05-01)
In this report we discuss the present situation of solar water heating for domestic supplies in Turkey and give the results of a computer analysis for nine distinct regions. The analyses are carried out for four typical days of the four seasons and also on a monthly base. The results show that detailed initial work must be carried out before installing the system to determine the optimized collector area. Such analysis can provide efficient using of the Sun's energy as well as economical benefits in the ini...
Residential energy efficiency: Turkish case
Kartal, Aysun; Türüt Aşık, Serap.; Department of Economics (2019)
This study aims to analyze residential electricity demand of Turkey between 2008 and 2015, provide relative efficiency scores of provinces in electricity use and reveal the determinants of (in)efficiency through stochastic frontier approach. Empirical results indicate that having higher income, inhabiting in densely populated provinces and living at detached houses result in increasing electricity consumption at the residential sector. On the other hand, as household size increases, electricity consumption ...
