Thermoeconomic optimization of simple refrigerators is formulated and applied to a specific case. Condenser and evaporator areas and compressor efficiency are selected as the independent design variables of the system components. Exergy analysis is carried out to find local and total irreversibilities. Costs assigned for exergy losses are combined with capital and recovery costs, and equations for thermoeconomic optimum of components are derived. Finally, as a case study, the equations are solved to determine the thermoeconomic optimum refrigeration system of a domestic refrigerator whose cooling load and operation temperatures (inner and outer) are specified. Thermodynamic and thermoeconomic comparison of combined cycle cogeneration systems
Colpan, Can O.; Yesin, Tulay (2006-01-01)
In this paper, several configurations of combined cycle cogeneration systems are investigated by energy, exergy and thermoeconomic analyses. In each of these configurations, varying steam demand is considered rather than fixed steam demand. Among the different approaches for thermoeconomic analysis in the literature, the specific exergy costing method is applied. Since the systems have more than one product (process steam and electrical power), systems are divided into several sub-systems and cost balances ...
Thermoelastic response of a fin exhibiting elliptic thickness profile: An analtical solution
Eraslan, Ahmet Nedim (Elsevier BV, 2008-03-01)
A thermoelastic analytical solution of a variable thickness cooling fin problem is presented. A variable thickness annular fin mounted on a hot rotating rigid shaft is considered. The thickness of the fin is assumed to vary radially in a continuously variable nonlinear elliptic form. An energy equation that accounts for the conduction, convective heat loss from peripheral and edge surfaces, thickness variation and rotation is adopted. The thermoelastic equation is obtained under formal assumptions of plane ...
Thermoelectric effects in menososcopic physics
Çipiloğlu, M. Ali; Turgut, Sadi; Department of Physics (2004)
The electrical and thermal conductance and the Seebeck coefficient are calculated for one-dimensional systems, and their behavior as a function of temperature and chemical potential is investigated. It is shown that the conductances are proportional to an average of the transmission probability around the Fermi level with the average taken for the thermal conductance being over a wider range. This has the effect of creating less well-defined plateaus for thermal-conductance quantization experiments. For wea...
Thermoplastic response of a linearly hardening cylinder subjected to nonuniform heat source and convective boundary condition
Eraslan, Ahmet Nedim (Informa UK Limited, 2004-05-01)
An analytical model based on Tresca's yield criterion and its L associated flow rule is developed to analyze the thermoelastoplastic response of a linearly hardening cylinder subjected to a nonuniform heat source and convective heat transfer condition at the external boundary. Closed form solutions are obtained for a state of generalized plane strain in different stages of elastic-plastic deformation. Considering a cylinder that is constrained axially, the plastic deformation commences at the axis and depen...
Composite index for benchmarking local energy systems of Mediterranean port cities
Kılkış, Şiir (2015-12-01)
Benchmarking the performance of local energy systems requires an integrated approach. This paper develops a composite index that consists of a unique set of 7 dimensions and 35 main indicators. The SDEWES (Sustainable Development of Energy, Water, and Environment Systems) Index is applied to a sample of 22 Mediterranean port cities. The index integrates energy and CO2 emissions data from SEAP (Sustainable Energy Action Plans). The values of the indicators are aggregated based on the Min-Max method for a fin...
