Developing a perfect absorber based on metamaterials (MTMs) is a promising technique towards improving the efficiency of solar photovoltaic cells. In this study, a novel MTM-based perfect absorber (MPA) is proposed for solar cell applications, which exhibits an excellent single-band with high absorption rate of 99.7% in visible frequency regime (resonance frequency of 614.4 THz) with an outstanding absorption bandwidth of 15.5%. The proposed design presents a high symmetry flexibility which makes it easy to fabricate. Besides, the simulation results for the defined different incident angles and different polarisation (transverse electric and transverse magnetic) confirm the quality of the proposed design by showing how insensitive it is to both the defined incident angles (normal and oblique incident) and different polarisation angles of electromagnetic wave. The parametric study on dielectric spacer shows the tunability characteristic of an intended MPA structure. The proposed MPA design is a good candidate for fabrication of high-efficiency solar cell operating in a visible frequency range.

Polarization Angle Independent Perfect Metamaterial Absorbers for Solar Cell Applications in the Microwave, Infrared, and Visible Regime
Dincer, Furkan; Akgol, Oguzhan; KARAASLAN, MUHARREM; ÜNAL, EMİN; Sabah, Cumali (EMW Publishing, 2014-01-01)
We design, characterize, and analyze a new kind of metamaterial (MTM) absorber (MA) in different frequency regions for the solar cell applications. This MTM based structure is particularly presented in a range of the solar spectrum in order to utilize the solar energy effectively. The proposed MTM based solar cell provides perfect absorption for both infrared and visible frequency ranges and can be used for the realization of more efficient new solar cells. The structure is also tested in terms of the polar...
Effective bandwidth approach for the spectral splitting of solar spectrum using diffractive optical elements
Yolalmaz, Alim; Yüce, Emre (The Optical Society, 2020-04-27)
Spectral splitting of the sunlight using diffractive optical elements (DOEs) is an effective method to increase the efficiency of solar panels. Here, we design phase-only DOEs by using an iterative optimization algorithm to spectrally split and simultaneously concentrate solar spectrum. In our calculations, we take material dispersion into account as well as the normalized blackbody spectrum of the sunlight. The algorithm consists of the local search optimization and is strengthened with an outperforming lo...
Polarization angle insensitive dual-band perfect metamaterial absorber for solar cell applications
Rufangura, Patrick; Sabah, Cumali (2015-04-29)
A metamaterial absorber that effectively harvests solar energy is being proposed in this paper using a simple and high flexible structure. The proposed structure unit cell comprises of three vital layers. The ground metallic plane, an intermediate dielectric spacer while patches are wisely prepared on the top of a dielectric spacer. Geometrical parameters of the proposed metamaterial is studied in order to get insight on their impact for the absorption behaviour of the structure. The results from simulation...
Solvent selection for fabrication of low temperature ZnO electron transport layer in perovskite solar cells
Ahmadi, S. Hamideh; Ghaffarkani, Mashhood; Ameri, Mohsen; Safari, Nasser; Mohajerani, Ezeddin (Elsevier BV, 2020-08-01)
Zinc Oxide (ZnO) with an easy synthesis method, low processing temperature, and high charge carrier mobility has been considered as a proper electron transport layer (ETL) for perovskite solar cells. Herein, we investigate the effect of the most common solvents for the preparation of ZnO and investigate their application as ETL for PSC. ZnO layers were prepared from three different solvents 2-methoxyethanol (2ME), isopropyl alcohol (IPA) and ethanol. A complete investigation of the structural, morphological...
Broad band metamaterial absorber based on wheel resonators with lumped elements for microwave energy harvesting
KARAASLAN, MUHARREM; BAĞMANCI, MEHMET; ÜNAL, EMİN; AKGÖL, OĞUZHAN; ALTINTAŞ, OLCAY; Sabah, Cumali (Springer Science and Business Media LLC, 2018-05-01)
A new metamaterial absorber structure is designed and characterized both numerically and experimentally for microwave energy harvesting applications. The proposed structure includes four wheel resonators with different dimensions, from which the overall response of the structure can then be obtained by summing all the overlapping frequency responses corresponding to each dimension. The essential operation frequency range of the wheels is selected in such a way that the energy used in wireless communications...
