This study was performed as one phase of an extensive research program focusing on the seismic behaviour of precast connections carried out in Middle East Technical University. The primary objective of the research program was to observe and investigate the seismic behaviour of the connection detail proposed by the collaborating company and the specimens with improved details, in order to develop a 11 moment resisting precast concrete beam-to-beam connection". In this study, six beam-beam connection subassemblies were tested under reversed cyclic loading simulating severe earthquake action. The first specimen was a monolithic specimen used as a reference specimen and tested to define the reference behaviour. The second specimen was a precast specimen, which was detailed by a company specializing in precast concrete production. The remaining specimens were modified according to the results of the formerly tested specimens. All of the specimens were identical in dimensions. All test specimens were 1/2.5 scaled models of the improved connection details used in the highly critical earthquake zones. The behaviour of the precast members was compared with that of the reference one and with the others. In order to improve the seismic performance of the connection, several recommendations for future research and practices are also given in the context of the paper.

Upgrading of slab-column connections using fiber reinforced polymers
Binici, Barış (Elsevier BV, 2005-01-01)
The results of an experimental program on upgrading of reinforced concrete slab-column connections subjected to monotonic shear and unbalanced moment transfer are presented in this study. Externally installed carbon fiber reinforced polymer (CFRP) stirrups acting as shear reinforcement around the slab-column connection area were used with two patterns of CFRP arrangements. It was found that the proposed method resulted in punching shear capacity increases up to 60% relative to the specimen without any stren...
Reliability-based evaluation of scouring around dual bridge piers
Yilmaz, Meric; Çalamak, Melih; Yanmaz, Ali Melih (Croatian Association of Civil Engineers, 2019-01-01)
The causes of uncertainty involved in temporal variation of the depth of cavern formation due to clear water scouring at dual piers with tandem arrangement are identified in this study. In an example, the probability of failure induced by scouring around dual piers is estimated for various pier spacing using probabilistic analysis. The effects of changes in the coefficient of variation of probabilistic scouring variables and probability distributions on the probability of the loss of stability, are also inv...
Development and analytical verification of an inelastic reinforced concrete joint model
Unal, Mehmet; Burak Bakır, Burcu (Elsevier BV, 2013-07-01)
Previous experimental research indicated that beam-to-column connections of reinforced concrete (RC) moment resisting frame structures experience considerable deformations under earthquake loading and these deformations have a major contribution to the story drift of the building. In current analysis and design applications, however, the connection regions are generally modeled as rigid zones and the inelastic behavior of the joint is not considered. This assumption gives rise to an underestimation of the s...
Strength and stiffness of floor trusses fabricated from cold-formed steel lipped channels
Dizdar, Cagan; Baran, Eray; Topkaya, Cem (Elsevier BV, 2019-02-15)
This paper reports findings of an experimental study on floor trusses fabricated from cold-formed steel lipped channel sections. In design, the members of these trusses are generally considered as pin-ended and their capacities are assessed under pure compressive and tensile loads by making use of commonly accepted design specifications. Seventeen full-scale floor trusses were experimentally investigated through four point bending tests. Thickness of lipped channels, number of connection fasteners, and type...
Seismic roof isolation of Halkapinar Gymnasium
Duran, Cihan Kurtuluş; Yılmaz, Çetin; Department of Civil Engineering (2007)
In this study, seismic roof isolation solutions were investigated with a case study of Halkapınar Gymnasium, izmir. In the first part, seismic isolation was explanied and philosophy behind it was given. In the second part, existing seismic roof isolators, elastomeric bearing and viscous damper, were investigated with different support isolation combinations. In the third part, two more types of seismic isolators, lead rubber bearing and friction pendulum isolators, were also analyzed by using the same model...
