Design recommendations for reinforced concrete beam-column connections are based on limited experimental studies on the seismic behavior of eccentric connections. To supplement existing information, an experimental study was conducted that focused on the affect of eccentricity of spandrel beams with respect to the column. Specimens included a floor slab and transverse beams to evaluate the effect of slab participation. Test results indicated that including the floor system significantly reduced the negative influence of eccentricity. It was observed that damage was reduced, specimens had fuller load-versus-drift hysteresis loops with high energy dissipation capacities, and deterioration of joint shear stiffness and strength were delayed. Moreover the joint shear stresses resisted by the connections, without major damage, were higher than current design values. This was due to the participation of a larger area of the joint, region in resisting shear which indicates that "Recommendations for Design of Beam-Column Connections in Monolithic Reinforced Concrete Structures (ACI 352R-02)" (Joint ACI-ASCE Committee 352) recommendations for effective joint width are conservative.

In this study, the effect of columns with a rocking-base isolation system on enhancing the seismic performance of a reinforced concrete building is investigated. A compara- tive study comprising of comparisons of fixed-based and rocking-based systems with post-tensioning strands and free column ends is conducted. For analysis purposes, a reinforced-concrete building with shear walls was designed, modeled, and analyzed in ETABS software. Nonlinear boundary time history analysis (NTHA) was conducted by exposi...
Joint shear strength prediction for reinforced concrete beam-to-column connections
Unal, Mehmet; Burak Bakır, Burcu (2012-02-10)
In this analytical study numerous prior experimental studies on reinforced concrete beam-to-column connections subjected to cyclic loading are investigated and a database of geometric properties, material strengths, configuration details and test results of subassemblies is established. Considering previous experimental research and employing statistical correlation method, parameters affecting joint shear capacity are determined. Afterwards, an equation to predict the joint shear strength is formed based o...
Analytical Evaluation of the Cyclic Response of Reinforced Concrete Beam-to-Column Connections
Burak Bakır, Burcu (2012-09-24)
The shear distortions that beam-to-column connections undergo under earthquake loading have a major contribution to the story drift of a structure. However, the connection regions are generally modeled as rigid zones and the inelastic behavior of the joint is not considered in the dynamic analysis. Therefore, the story drifts are underestimated and the seismic performance of a building cannot be assessed properly. In this study, a model that predicts the joint shear strength versus strain relationship is de...
Dynamic characterization of bolted joints using FRF decoupling and optimization
Tol, Serife; Özgüven, Hasan Nevzat (2015-03-01)
Mechanical connections play a significant role in predicting dynamic characteristics of assembled structures. Therefore, equivalent dynamic models for joints are needed. Due to the complexity of joints, it is difficult to describe joint dynamics with analytical models. Reliable models are generally obtained using experimental measurements. In this paper an experimental identification method based on FRF decoupling and optimization algorithm is proposed for modeling joints. In the method the FRFs of two subs...
Quantitative approach to rapid seismic evaluation of slab-on-girder steel highway bridges
Dicleli, Murat (1996-01-01)
A quantitative approach follows for developing a methodology for the rapid seismic evaluation and ranking of slab-on-girder steel highway bridges. In the development of this methodology, analytical expressions are introduced to calculate the seismically induced forces and displacements in bridge components, first assuming that damage to bearings is not acceptable and then removing this constraint. In the latter case, the superstructure is assumed to become unrestrained and slide on its supports. The seismic...
