The aim of this study is to investigate theoretically the effect of different system operating conditions, types of air heater, and some different design parameters and a weather condition on a solar water desalination system performance under the climatological conditions of Ankara (40 degrees N,33 degrees E), Turkey. For this purpose, a computer simulation program based on the mathematical model is developed by means of MATLAB software. In this simulation program, the fourth order Runge-Kutta method is used to solve the energy balance equations numerically. The desalination unit is configured by a double-pass flat plate solar air heater with two glass covers, humidifying tower, storage tank and dehumidifying exchanger. The system used in this work is based on the idea of closed water and open air cycles. Air is heated by using a double-pass solar air heater whereas water is not heated.

Theoretical study of solar ponds for space heating in diverse climatic conditions of Turkey
Taşdemiroğlu, Erol (Elsevier BV, 1988-11)
The thermal performance of a solar pond operating under steady-state conditions is analysed theoretically for use in space heating in four diverse Turkish locations having widely different climates. The average pond temperature for each month is obtained for maximum heat extraction, with the thickness of the pond-insulating layers as a fixed parameter. For a fixed pond-insulating layer, the useful heat withdrawn during the month is calculated for these four locations. Space-heating loads and the solar heati...
A NEW CORRELATION FOR TWO-PHASE PRESSURE DROPS IN FULLY DEVELOPED DILUTE SLURRY UP-FLOWS THROUGH AN ANNULUS
Oezbelge, Tuelay A.; Camciuenal, Guelden (Informa UK Limited, 2009-01-01)
The prediction of two-phase pressure drops is important in the design of fluidized beds, heat exchangers, slurry transport lines, annular risers in reactors, driers, and other applications of particulate flows. Experimental data for liquid-solid up-flows through annuli are very limited. In this study, a correlation was developed for predicting two-phase pressure drops via Euler number (Eutp) for liquid-solid suspension up-flows in the fully developed flow region of an annulus in terms of mixture Reynolds nu...
Feasibility of biomass heating system in Middle East Technical University, Northern Cyprus Campus
Asumadu-Sarkodie, Samuel; Owusu, Phebe Asantewaa (Informa UK Limited, 2016-01-01)
Global interest in using biomass feedstock to produce heat and power is increasing. In this study, RETScreen modelling software was used to investigate the feasibility of biomass heating system in Middle East Technical University, Northern Cyprus Campus. Weiss Kessel Multicratboiler system with 2 MW capacity using rice straw biomass as fuel and 10 units of RBI (R) CB0500 boilers with 144 kW capacity using natural gas as fuel were selected for the proposed biomass heating system. The total cost of the biomas...
Experimental investigation of a natural zeolite-water adsorption cooling unit
Solmus, Ismail; KAFTANOĞLU, BİLGİN; Yamali, Cemil; Baker, Derek Keıth (Elsevier BV, 2011-11-01)
In this study, a thermally driven adsorption cooling unit using natural zeolite-water as the adsorbent-refrigerant pair has been built and its performance investigated experimentally at various evaporator temperatures. The primary components of the cooling unit are a shell and tube adsorbent bed, an evaporator, a condenser, heating and cooling baths, measurement instruments and supplementary system components. The adsorbent bed is considered to enhance the bed's heat and mass transfer characteristics; the b...
Investigation of as-quenched and tempered commercial steels by Magnetic Barkhausen Noise method
Gür, Cemil Hakan; Çam, İbrahim (Inderscience Publishers, 2006-01-01)
This study aims to characterise as-quenched and tempered steels by the Magnetic Barkhausen Noise method, and to contribute to optimisation of heat treatment processes. Identical austenitisation and quenching procedures were applied to SAE 1040 and SAE 4140 specimens to eliminate the effect of grain size. Samples were tempered at 200°C and 600°C for 2 hours. Microstructures were characterised by metallographic examinations and hardness measurements. Amplitude, position and frequency spectrum of signals were ...
