We studied the seasonal variability of the water circulation in the Caspian Sea with the use of an improved model of the thermohydrodynamical processes. In comparison with recent studies [4], in the model proposed, the problem is solved over a finer spatial grid using 6-h atmospheric conditions. The explicit description of the mesoscale processes and high-frequency oscillations with time scales of similar to10(2) - 10(4) s allowed us to widen the set of phenomena represented by the model. We analyzed the monthly mean characteristics of the water circulation, the eddy generation in the jet alongshore currents, the three-dimensional structure of the upwelling, the currents off the Kura River, and the currents along the eastern coast of the sea. The results of the modeling are compared with the data of field observations of the large-scale and mesoscale phenomena in the Caspian Sea. The subsurface cyclonic currents (below 20-50 m) in the deep-water parts of the sea are the most stable during a year. The seasonal variability of the surface currents is caused by the wind variability and momentum exchange with the subsurface currents.

Seasonal Changes in the Composition and Abundance ofZooplankton in the Seas of the Mediterranean Basin
Kovalev, Av; Mazzocchı, Mg; Toklu Alıçlı, Benin; Skryabın, Va; Kıdeyş, Ahmet Erkan (2003-01-01)
Seasonal changes in the composition, abundance and biomass of zooplankton in the seas of the Mediterranean basin (the Mediterranean, Black and Azov seas) have been reviewed using our own data and data from the literature. In the deep-water central regions of the seas, the seasonal cycle of zooplankton abundance is characterised by one maximum occurring in spring or summer. In the coastal regions, two to three peaks (spring, summer and autumn) exist for the zooplankton abundance. The amplitude of seasonal fl...
Seasonal variability of wind and thermohaline-driven circulation in the black sea: Modeling studies
Oguz, T; MalanotteRizzoli, P (1996-07-15)
The seasonal variability of the Black Sea circulation is studied using an eddy-resolving primitive equation model. A series of numerical experiments is carried out to determine the relative importance of wind stress, air-sea thermohaline fluxes, and river-induced lateral buoyancy forcing in driving the circulation on the monthly and seasonal timescales. A synthesis is made of the results with those obtained under yearly climatological conditions by Oguz et al. [1995] to assess whether the major circulation ...
Monthly changes in the abundance and biomass of picoplankton (heterotrophic bacteria & cyanobacteria Synechococcus) in the Cilician Basin (Eastern Mediterranean)
Bayındırlı, Cansu; Uysal, Zahit; Department of Marine Biology and Fisheries (2007)
Within the content of this thesis, it was aimed to understand the changes in the biomass and abundance of heterotrophic bacteria and marine cyanobacteria Synechococcus in time with respect to multitude of ambient physical, chemical and biological factors. For this, monthly samples from discrete depths in the offshore (0-20-40-60-80-100-125-150-175-200 m) and in the near shore (surface and 10 m) stations over a period of one year in the Cilician Basin (eastern Mediterranean) were collected via rosette sample...
Annual variations in biochemical composition of size fractionated particulate matter and zooplankton abundance and biomass in Mersin Bay, NE Mediterranean Sea
Zenginer Yılmaz, Arife (2010-05-01)
Seasonal changes in biochemical composition of different particle size classes (pico-, nano- and micro-particulate matter) and the zooplankton abundance and biomass were studied in NE Mediterranean between November 2004 and January 2006. Sampling was carried out at monthly intervals from two stations representing coastal and open water characteristics. Dominance of size fractions showed seasonal variations in each biochemical component but on annual average pico size fraction predominated and accounted for ...
Long term impact of dissolved dispersed petroleum hydrocarbons (DDPH) in Gulf of Iskenderun
Salİhog̈lu, İlkay; Saydam, Deniz; Yilmaz, Ayşen (Elsevier BV, 1987)
DDPH in sea water, polyaromatic hydrocarbons (PAH's) in sediment and in some marine biota were monitored for the period of August 1981 and April 1984. Maximum DDPH was measured in winter and minimum in summer. This phenomena showed an inverse relation with the sea water temperature. Increase in sea water DDPH concentration reflected itself immediately in fish liver but two months time lack between fish liver and flesh was observed. GLC analysis results of sea water extracts and various crude oil showed t...
