In this study, the microbiologically influenced corrosion caused by sulphate-reducing bacteria (SRB) has been studied. The material tested was a drilling pipe steel designated as N-80. Weight loss studies and potential measurements were carried out in two types of culturing solutions, with and without SRB inoculated. From weight loss studies, corrosion rate in SRB inoculated solution has been found to be roughly six fold greater than that in the medium without SRB. Also under the investigated conditions, the effective concentration of biocide necessary to control corrosion of N-80 steel in the presence of SRB, has been found to be at least 500 ppm. Aerobic biological treatment of opium alkaloid wastewater-effect of gamma radiation and fenton's oxidation as pretreatment
Bural, Cavit Burak; Dilek, Filiz Bengü; Department of Environmental Engineering (2008)
In this study, aerobic biological treatment of opium alkaloid wastewater and the effect of gamma preirradiation and fenton’s oxidation were investigated. First, the biodegradability of alkaloid wastewater was investigated by batch reactors and wastewater was found to be highly biodegradable providing 83 90 % COD degradation. In order to evaluate the effect of irradiation, original wastewater and irradiated wastewaters (40 & 140 kGy) were compared by means of BOD5/COD values and through aerobic batch experi...
Distribution of dissolved and particulate forms of iron and manganese in the Black Sea
Erdoğan, Selahattin; Yemenicioğlu, Semal; Department of Marine Sciences (2002)
The principal aim of this study is to examine the behavior of dissolved inorganic and particulate forms of manganese and iron compounds in the oxic/anoxic transition (suboxic) zone of the western cyclone and coastal margin of the Black Sea. The samples were collected from the stations visited during three cruises of RV/Bilim at July 2000, September 2000, July 2001 and RV/Knorr at July 2001 in the Black Sea. In addition, real time profiles of dissolved Mn and Fe(ll) were obtained using a continuous profiling...
Possible use of EPDM in radioactive waste disposal: Long term low dose rate and short term high dose rate irradiation in aquatic and atmospheric environment
Hacioglu, Firat; Ozdemir, Tonguc; Cavdar, Seda; Usanmaz, Ali (2013-02-01)
In this study, changes in the properties of ethylene propylene diene terpolymer (EPDM) irradiated with different dose rates in ambient atmosphere and aqueous environment were investigated. Irradiations were carried out both with low dose and high dose rate irradiation sources. EPDM samples which were differentiated from each other by peroxide type and 5-ethylidene 2-norbornene (ENB) contents were used. Long term low dose rate irradiations were carried out for the duration of up to 2.5 years (total dose of 1...
Application of the Pippard relations to ammonia near the melting point
Yurtseven, Hasan Hamit (1999-09-01)
This study gives our application of the Pippard relations to the ammonia near its melting point. The Pippard relations between the specific heat C-P, the thermal expansivity alpha(P) and the isothermal compressibility kappa(T), have been established for the ammonia near its melting point. We have obtained that the Pippard relations are valid for the ammonia. We give here an evidence that on the basis of the experimental data the critical transition in this system near its melting point can be considered as ...
Production of precipitated calcium carbonate from marble wastes
Sezer, Nurettin; Arol, Ali İhsan; Department of Mining Engineering (2013)
The aim of this study was to investigate the production of precipitated calcium carbonate from marble wastes. Limestone is used as the source for the production of precipitated calcium carbonate. Marble wastes primarily constitute of CaCO3. As the major content of the marble waste and limestone are the same, marble wastes can be used as an alternative source for the production of precipitated calcium carbonate. By this way, both the adverse environmental effects of marble wastes can be prevented and the was...
