The dependences of the refractive indices of aqueous solutions of dextran (D), poly(ethylene glycol) (PEG), and poly(vinyl pyrrolidone) (PVP), and D-PEG and D-PVP mixtures, on the polymer concentration has been investigated in order to study structural and conformational changes as a function of the increasing polymer concentration. It is shown that in contrast to solutions of single polymers, conformational changes are not observed in aqueous solutions of mixed polymers, even at high concentrations, and the phase separation which is observed is due to a change of structure or state of the water. We have determined the rates of the processes of the phase separation in these aqueous biphasic polymer systems. Copyright (C) 1996 Elsevier Science Ltd.

Investigation of phase inversion behavior of cellulose- ionic liquid solutions in relationship with membrane formation
Durmaz, Elif Nur; Çulfaz Emecen, Pınar Zeynep; Department of Chemical Engineering (2017)
Cellulose membranes were produced from ionic liquid solutions by phase inversion technique and thermodynamic and kinetic aspects of the process were investigated to relate these to membrane morphology and performance. In thermodynamics part, polymer-solvent, polymer-nonsolvent and polymer-solvent-nonsolvent interactions were examined experimentally, together with Hansen solubility parameter estimations. Kinetics part consisted of measuring phase inversion rate. Obtained membranes were characterized by their...
On the Electrochemical Reduction Mechanism of CaWO4 to W Powder
Erdogan, Metehan; Karakaya, İshak (2012-08-01)
The reduction mechanism of CaWO4 to W in molten eutectic CaCl2-NaCl electrolyte has been studied. Cyclic voltammetry and constant potential electrolysis tests were performed to determine the reversible cell potential. Analyses of the experimental results revealed that at least 2.2 V was required to compensate the potentials for the accompanying cell reaction and the electrode polarizations. A cell reaction was proposed by associating the experimental results and the Gibbs energy changes of the possible reac...
A squaraine-based sodium selective fluorescent chemosensor
Oguz, U; Akkaya, EU (1998-08-06)
A novel squaraine with a lariat-crown ether cation-receptor unit was synthesized and shown to selectively respond to Na+ ions in polar protic solvents. The selectivity of the novel ligand, together with the impressive spectroscopic properties of squaraines yields a promising chemosensor,
Investigation of thermal characteristics of naphthoxazines and polynaphthoxazines via pyrolysis mass spectrometry
Koyuncu, Zeynep; Hacaloğlu, Jale; Department of Chemistry (2009)
In this study, polymerization mechanisms of aromatic (C6H5 or C6F5) and alkyl (CH3, C2H5, C3H7, C6H13, C12H25 or C18H37) amine based naphthoxazine monomers (15-Na, 15Na-C1, 15Na-C2, 15Na-C3, 15Na-C6, 15Na-C12 and 15Na-C18) and thermal degradation mechanisms of polynaphthoxazines synthesized by curing the naphthoxazine monomers (P-15-Na, P-15NaF, P-15Na-C1, P-15Na-C2, P-15Na-C3, P-15Na-C6, P-15Na-C12 and P-15Na-C18) were studied by direct pyrolysis mass spectrometry. During the curing process, the evolutions...
Investigation of the incommensurate (INC) phase between α and β phases in quartz and related materials
Ateş, Simge; Yurtseven, Hasan Hamit; Department of Physics (2021-2-10)
Incommensurate (INC) phase as an intermediate sinusoidal phase which exists in anarrow temperature range (∼1.3◦C) between the low-temperatureαand the high-temperatureβphases in quartz, is investigated extensively. The phase transitions oftheα-INC and INC-βoccurring as first order and second order type, respectively, are studied using the experimental data from the literature. Order-disorder transi-tion between theαandβquartz through the incommensurate phase is described bytemperature and pressure dependen...
