Rapid differentiation of MSC into adipocytes and osteocytes is facilitated by Toll-Like receptor engagement
Tas, Ibrahim; Tokcaer-Keskin, Zeynep; Ayhan, Fatma; Gürsel, Mayda; Akcali, Kamil (2010-04-01)
Mesenchymal stem cells are multipotent progenitor cells capable of differentiating into several lineages including adipocytes, and osteocytes. While they are regarded as non-immunogenic, accumulating evidence suggests that MSC expresses several TLRs. We checked the contribution of TLR ligands to MSC differentiation. Rat bone marrow derived MSC surface marker and TLR transcript levels were checked by FACS and RT-PCR respectively. MSCs were CD29hi, CD71dim, CD90hi, and negative for CD45 & CD34. They expressed...
Life cycle assessment of two different renewable energy systems for a selected region: Bozcaada island
Şentürk, Ayşe Eylül; Oğuz, Elif (2020-01-01)
Energy production without destroying the environment has been one of the most crucial issues for the people living in today'sworld. In order to analyse whole environmental impacts of energy production process, life cycle assessment (LCA) is widely used. In this study, two distinct renewable energy systems are assessed. First, a land-based wind farm which has been operating in Bozcaada Island since 2000 compared with a proposed solar photovoltaic power plant in terms of Energy Pay-Back Time (EPBT) periods an...
Suppressive oligodeoxynucleotides protect mice from lethal endotoxic shock.

Endotoxic shock is a life-threatening condition caused by exposure to bacterial LPS. LPS triggers the release of acute phase, proinflammatory, and Th1 cytokines that facilitate the development of endotoxic shock. Synthetic oligodeoxynucleotides (ODN) expressing suppressive TTAGGG motifs effectively down-regulate the production of proinflammatory and Th1 cytokines elicited by a variety of immune stimuli. The current results demonstrate that suppressive ODN protect mice from LPS-induced endotoxic shock. Under...
Autophagy, Apoptosis, Mitoptosis and Necrosis: Interdependence Between Those Pathways and Effects on Cancer

Cell death is a fundamental ingredient of life. Thus, not surprisingly more than one form of cell death exists. Several excellent reviews on various forms of cell death have already been published but manuscripts describing interconnection and interdependence between such processes are uncommon. Here, what follows is a brief introduction on all three classical forms of cell death, followed by a more detailed insight into the role of p53, the master regulator of apoptosis, and other forms of cell death. Whil...
Potential role of phosphatidylinositol 3 kinase, rather than DNA-dependent protein kinase, in CpG DNA-induced immune activation.

Unmethylated CpG motifs present in bacterial DNA stimulate a strong innate immune response. There is evidence that DNA-dependent protein kinase (DNA-PK) mediates CpG signaling. Specifically, wortmannin (an inhibitor of phosphatidylinositol 3 kinase [PI3]-kinases including DNA-PK) interferes with CpG-dependent cell activation, and DNA-PK knockout (KO) mice fail to respond to CpG stimulation. Current studies establish that wortmannin actually inhibits the uptake and colocalization of CpG DNA with toll-like re...
