This paper presents the results of experimental studies carried out to conduct a comprehensive investigation on the influence of Electrical Discharge Machining (EDM) input parameters on the characteristics of the EDM process. The studied process characteristics included machining features, embracing material removal rate, tool wear ratio, and arithmetical mean roughness, as well surface integrity characteristics comprised of the thickness of white layer and the depth of heat affected zone of AISI H13 tool steel as workpiece. The experiments performed under the designed full factorial procedure, and the considered EDM input parameters included pulse on-time and pulse current. The results of this study could be utilized in the selection of optimum process parameters to achieve the desired EDM efficiency surface roughness, and surface integrity when machining AISI H13 tool steel. Experimental investigation and 3D finite element prediction of the white layer thickness, heat affected zone, and surface roughness in EDM process
Shabgard, Mohammadreza; Oliaei, Samad Nadimi Bavil; Seyedzavvar, Mirsadegh; Najadebrahimi, Ahmad (2011-12-01)
An axisymmetric three-dimensional model or temperature distribution in the electrical discharge machining process has been developed using the finite element method to estimate the surface integrity characteristics of AISI H13 tool steel as workpiece. White layer thickness, depth of heat affected zone, and arithmetical mean roughness consisting of the studied surface integrity features on which the effect of process parameters, including pulse on-time and pulse current were investigated. Additionally, the e...
An investigation on sample size distribution in electric discharge machining (EDM)
Darendeliler, Haluk (1991-01-01)
In this study, 150 experiments are conducted at different machining conditions to determine the sample size for workpiece removal rate and tool wear rate with a certain acceptable error in Electric Discharge Machining (EDM). Experimental workpiece removal rate and tool wear rate data are found to be distributed normally with a good fit. Statistically, it is shown that 150 experiments are large enough random sample to reflect the characteristics of the population. Two methods are proposed to find the sample ...
A numerical method for predicting depth of heat affected zone in EDM process for AISI H13 tool steel
Shabgard, M. R.; Seyedzavvar, M.; Oliaei, S. Nadimi Bavil; Ivanov, A. (2011-07-01)
This study presents a finite element model (FEM) to model temperature distribution for AISI H13 tool steel workpiece in electrical discharge machining (EDM) at different machining parameters (pulse current, pulse on-time, temperature-sensitive material properties, size of heat source, and material flushing efficiency). Scanning electron microscopy (SEM) with energy dispersive x-ray (EDX) and micro-hardness tests were used to validate accuracy of FEM predictions. Increasing pulse on-time leads to a higher de...
Effects of reactor geometry on dissociating CO2 and electrode degradation in a MHCD plasma reactor
Taylan, Onur; Pinero, Daniel; Berberoğlu, Halil (2018-08-01)
This paper reports an experimental study on the effects of reactor geometry for dissociating carbon dioxide using a microhollow cathode discharge (MHCD) reactor, and the associated electrode degradation. A MHCD reactor consists of two hollow metal electrodes that are separated by dielectric material. The geometric reactor parameters studied were the dielectric material thickness and the diameter of the reactor hole. Dielectric thicknesses of 150, 300 and 450 mu m and discharge hole diameters of 200, 400 and...
Effect of carbon nanotube surface treatment on the morphology, electrical, and mechanical properties of the microfiber-reinforced polyethylene/poly(ethylene terephthalate)/carbon nanotube composites
Yesil, Sertan; Bayram, Göknur (2013-01-15)
The aim of this study is to investigate the effects of carbon nanotube (CNT) chemical properties, CNT content, and molding temperature on the morphology, electrical, and mechanical properties of the microfiber-reinforced polymer composites. These composites were prepared by extrusion and hot stretching the poly(ethylene terephthalate) (PET)/CNT phase in high density polyethylene (HDPE) matrix. Surfaces of the CNT were modified by purification with strong acid mixture (HNO3 : H2SO4 mixture 1 : 1 by volume) f...
