In this study, 150 experiments are conducted at different machining conditions to determine the sample size for workpiece removal rate and tool wear rate with a certain acceptable error in Electric Discharge Machining (EDM). Experimental workpiece removal rate and tool wear rate data are found to be distributed normally with a good fit. Statistically, it is shown that 150 experiments are large enough random sample to reflect the characteristics of the population. Two methods are proposed to find the sample size by using the experimental data. Sample sizes obtained from the proposed methods are compared with those obtained from the classical sample size determination formula. The results from the formulation and one of the two proposed methods are found to be quite consistent. Also, the behavior of maximum error terms with increasing sample size is investigated for different machining conditions. (A)

Influence of Input Parameters on the Characteristics of the EDM Process
Shabgard, Mohammadreza; Seyedzavvar, Mirsadegh; Oliaei, Samad Nadimi Bavil (2011-09-01)
This paper presents the results of experimental studies carried out to conduct a comprehensive investigation on the influence of Electrical Discharge Machining (EDM) input parameters on the characteristics of the EDM process. The studied process characteristics included machining features, embracing material removal rate, tool wear ratio, and arithmetical mean roughness, as well surface integrity characteristics comprised of the thickness of white layer and the depth of heat affected zone of AISI H13 tool s...
A numerical method for predicting depth of heat affected zone in EDM process for AISI H13 tool steel
Shabgard, M. R.; Seyedzavvar, M.; Oliaei, S. Nadimi Bavil; Ivanov, A. (2011-07-01)
This study presents a finite element model (FEM) to model temperature distribution for AISI H13 tool steel workpiece in electrical discharge machining (EDM) at different machining parameters (pulse current, pulse on-time, temperature-sensitive material properties, size of heat source, and material flushing efficiency). Scanning electron microscopy (SEM) with energy dispersive x-ray (EDX) and micro-hardness tests were used to validate accuracy of FEM predictions. Increasing pulse on-time leads to a higher de...
Experimental investigation and 3D finite element prediction of the white layer thickness, heat affected zone, and surface roughness in EDM process
Shabgard, Mohammadreza; Oliaei, Samad Nadimi Bavil; Seyedzavvar, Mirsadegh; Najadebrahimi, Ahmad (2011-12-01)
An axisymmetric three-dimensional model or temperature distribution in the electrical discharge machining process has been developed using the finite element method to estimate the surface integrity characteristics of AISI H13 tool steel as workpiece. White layer thickness, depth of heat affected zone, and arithmetical mean roughness consisting of the studied surface integrity features on which the effect of process parameters, including pulse on-time and pulse current were investigated. Additionally, the e...
GEOMETRICAL APPROACH FOR REDUCTION OF TOOL SHAPE DEGENERATION IN ELECTRIC DISCHARGE MACHINING (EDM)
Cogun, Can; Deniz, Tayfun Caglar; Kucukturk, Gokhan (2012-01-01)
In this study, the geometric wear characteristics of tool electrodes were obtained for various pulse time, discharge current and machining depth settings in electric discharge machining. Different forms of protrusions were machined on the front surface of the tool to reduce the geometric wear. Significant reductions in original tool geometric wear characteristics (front wear, side wear and edge wear) were obtained with the use of square cross-section protrusions. The dimensions of the square cross-section p...
The effect of strain rate and temperature on deep drawing for different constitutive relations
Gökşen, Seçkin; Darendeliler, Haluk; Department of Mechanical Engineering (2019)
In this study, the effects of strain rate and temperature on deep drawing process are investigated by considering different yield criteria and hardening models. For this purpose, various punch velocity and temperature values are considered using 1 mmthick DKP6112 and AZ31 sheet materials. The results are compared according to thickness strain distribution and punch force obtained by a commercial finite element software. To express constitutive relations of corresponding materials for different strain rate a...
