An accurate modeling of the sheet metal deformations including the springback is one of the key factors in the efficient utilization of FE process simulation in the industrial setting. In this paper, a rate-independent anisotropic plasticity model accounting the Bauschinger effect is presented and applied in the FE forming and springback analyses. The proposed model uses the Hill's quadratic yield function in the description of the anisotropic yield loci of planar and transversely anisotropic sheets. The material strain-hardening behavior is simulated by an additive backstress form of the nonlinear kinematic hardening rule and the model parameters are computed explicitly based on the stress-strain curve in the sheet rolling direction. The proposed model is employed in the FE analysis of Numisheet'93 U-channel benchmark, and a performance comparison in terms of the predicted springback indicated an enhanced correlation with the average of measurements. In addition, the stamping analyses of an automotive part are conducted, and comparisons of the FE results using both the isotropic hardening plasticity model and the proposed model are presented in terms of the calculated strain, thickness, residual stress and bending moment distributions. It is observed that both models produce similar strain and thickness predictions; however, there appeared to be significant differences in computed residual stress and bending moments. Furthermore, the springback deformations with both plasticity models are compared with CMM measurements of the manufactured parts. The final part geometry and overall springback distortion pattern produced by the proposed model is mostly in agreement with the measurements and more accurate. 3D FEM simulation of steel quenching and investigation of the effect of asymmetric geometry on residual stress distribution
Simsir, Caner; Gür, Cemil Hakan (Elsevier BV, 2008-10-16)
During quench hardening of steel components, obtaining the desired distribution of microstructure and residual stresses with minimum distortion is essential in order to achieve production goals and reliable service performance. In this study, a 3D FEM based model, which is integrated into commercial FEA software Msc.Marc (R) via user subroutines, has been developed to predict temperature history, evolution of microstructure and internal stresses during quenching. For experimental verification, eccentrically...
Numerical simulation of solidification kinetics in A356/SiCp composites for assessment of as-cast particle distribution
CETIN, Arda; Kalkanlı, Ali (Elsevier BV, 2009-06-01)
The present work is aimed at studying the effect of solidification rate on reinforcement clustering in particle reinforced metal matrix composites (PMMCs) through numerical simulations and experimental studies. A macrotransport-solidification kinetics (MTSK) model was used to simulate the solidification kinetics of the PMMCs. The experimental validation of the numerical model was achieved through the Newtonian and Fourier thermal analysis methods. Results reveal that the MTSK model can be successfully used ...
State-of-the-art of simulation of sheet metal forming
Tekkaya, AE (Elsevier BV, 2000-06-01)
The paper starts with a brief historical overview to the attempts of numerical simulation of sheet metal forming. Comparison between bulk and sheet metal forming processes from the simulation point of view is given. Basic requirements of the applier to the simulation tools are summarized. Various possible methodologies are briefly discussed. Special emphasis is given to the static explicit and dynamic implicit finite element procedures. Also different element types are overviewed. Available important commer...
Control of the thickness distribution of evaporated functional electroceramic NTC thermistor thin films
Schmidt, R.; Parlak, Mehmet; Brinkman, Am (Elsevier BV, 2008-04-01)
In this work the thickness distribution of NTC thermistor thin films produced by low deposition rate (0.8 nm s(-1)) electron-beam evaporation is investigated. The target preparation, deposition conditions and geometrical set-up of the evaporation mechanism are described in detail. The evaporation geometry is shown to be critical for the thickness distribution of evaporated films. The film thickness distribution of evaporated layers was measured across a macroscopic film surface using Alpha Step stylus profi...
Effect of solidification rate on spatial distribution of SiC particles in A356 alloy composites
CETIN, Arda; Kalkanlı, Ali (Elsevier BV, 2008-08-26)
The damage and deformation behaviour of particulate reinforced metal matrix composites (PMMCs) can be highly sensitive to local variations in spatial distribution of reinforcement particles, which markedly depend on melt processing and solidification stages during production of PMMCs. The present paper attempts to study the effect of solidification rate on cluster formation in an Al-Si-Mg (A356) alloy composite reinforced with SiC particles and to explore the applicability of spatial functions to PMMC micro...
