A Conservation Management Plan for Gordion and its Environs has been developed by a multidisciplinary team within a partnership between the University of Pennsylvania (both the School of Design and Museum of Archaeology and Anthropology) and Middle East Technical University (Faculty of Architecture) in Ankara. The project has involved a new approach to the protection of cultural material at the site itself, as well as the survey and documentation of a 140 km2 area, with Gordion as its centre, to include the village of Yassihoyuk and five nearby villages, historic sites, hoyuks, or settlement mounds, and tumuli, or burial mounds. The project utilized photographs and standardized forms in the documentation of public and private buildings and areas. Based on this survey, the values of the site and its environs were reassessed, and an action plan presented for all project stakeholders. One of the primary stakeholders is the local population, who must be made aware of the damaging effects of deep ploughing to the tumuli.

Intelligent infrastructures: anatomy of the METU Campus
Ağırsoy, Ömer Faruk; Savaş Sargın, Ayşen; Department of Architecture (2022-2-02)
Designed and constructed with the ambition of generating “a small city” in the 1960s, Middle East Technical University (METU) Campus is facilitated with a sophisticated infrastructural design. This thesis focuses on the complex infrastructural systems, needs, and problems of the campus. The goal is to re-investigate the university campus as an early model for modern, sustainable, and liveable urban environments. Bağcı, Latife Sema; Bertram, Jan Krzysztof; İlgezdi Bertram, Gülçin; Department of Settlement Archaeology (2010)
The subject of presentation of archaeological resources is still a developing concept in Turkey. The concepts of educational value and concern, needs a more common recognition and more practice in this context. The same statement goes for the management of natural resources. However, proper public presentation of archaeological and natural resources and public education in those is crucial for the protection of these resources. Moreover, an integrated presentation, approaching the archaeological resources w...
Teaching mathematics in architecture
Sorguç, Arzu (Springer Science and Business Media LLC, 2005-04-01)
The Department of Architecture of Middle East Technical University offers a course entitled ‘Mathematics in Architecture’ for the third year students. In the beginning of the term, students are forced to imagine themselves as twodimensional creatures living in a two-dimensional space. At this point, fundamentals of architectural geometry are introduced first in the plane, simply by employing the set concept; mapping as a general tool is then introduced and students are asked to use mapping in their design t...
Generative design research for sustainability: exemplary cases for the adaptation of the EC guide tool and the ERM method
Kulaksız, Mert; Güngör Boncukçu, Itır; Oğur, Dilruba; Paksoy, İsmail Yavuz; Turhan, Senem; Doğan, Çağla (null; 2017-11-03)
This paper presents the main process of a graduate course entitled ‘Generative Design Research for Sustainability’ offered in the Department of Industrial Design at Middle East Technical University in the spring semester of 2015/2016 through exemplary design research cases conducted by the graduate students at the doctoral level. These cases focus on the adaptation of the generative tool and the method, namely Experience Chart (EC) Guide tool (Kulaksız, 2016) and Experience Reflection Modelling (ERM) method...
Building structure design as an integral part of architecture: A teaching model for students of architecture
Uenay, Ali Ihsan; Oezmen, Cengiz (Springer Science and Business Media LLC, 2006-09-01)
This paper explores the place of structural design within undergraduate architectural education. The role and format of lecture-based structure courses within an education system, organized around the architectural design studio is discussed with its most prominent problems and proposed solutions. The fundamental concept of the current teaching model in the Middle East Technical University (Ankara, Turkey) is quite appropriate for the education of future architects. If we consider that the main occupation o...
