The Lewis activity of the Meerwein-Ponndorf-Verley (MPV) reactions is hypothesized to be due to partial framework aluminum (PFAl) that is either octahedrally or tri-coordinated. Crystals grown in the ftee-fall environment of low earth orbit (LEO) are more uniform; that is, have fewer lattice "defects" compared to those grown in a gravity field (i.e., on earth). Therefore, crystals grown in orbit should be less catalytically active relative to their earth grown counterparts. The catalytic activity towards the MPV reaction, and the associated IR and XPS spectrum for zeolite Beta that was synthesized on earth (1g) and aboard the International Space Station (10(-3)-10(-5)g) were compared in their as-synthesized forms, and after applying heat treatment protocols designed to stress the crystal structure to generate Lewis acid sites (i.e., tri and octahedrally coordinated PFAl). The activity of the MPV reaction and cis-alcohol selectivity over the heat-treated flight samples was observed tobe lower than the identically heat-treated terrestrial zeolite Beta samples. Higher MP V activity as well as cis-alcohol selectivity is related to both a higher number of partial framework Al atoms (PFAl), and a constrained pore volume. As PFAl are created by the destruction of the framework upon heat treatment, flight samples were shown to be thermally more stable with fewer lattice defects and less associated stress in zeolite Beta crystals. The changes observed in the IR spectra, as well as the XPS Al Auger and 2p peaks, of the terrestrial samples support this conclusion. Additionally, the flight samples showed higher tr-alcohol selectivity, which implies more pore volume and less channel blockage. This is consistent with the fact that crystals grown in space have less stress, fewer lattice defects, and thus there are fewer channel obstructions.

Observation of Electroweak Production of Same-Sign W Boson Pairs in the Two Jet and Two Same-Sign Lepton Final State in Proton-Proton Collisions at root s=13 TeV
Sirunyan, A. M.; et. al. (American Physical Society (APS), 2018-02-01)
The first observation of electroweak production of same-sign W boson pairs in proton-proton collisions is reported. The data sample corresponds to an integrated luminosity of 35.9 fb(-1) collected at a center-of-mass energy of 13 TeV with the CMS detector at the LHC. Events are selected by requiring exactly two leptons (electrons or muons) of the same charge, moderate missing transverse momentum, and two jets with a large rapidity separation and a large dijet mass. The observed significance of the signal is...
Synthesis of alpha-Fe2O3/TiO2 heterogeneous composites by the sol-gel process and their photocatalytic activity
Bouziani, Asmae; PARK, JONGEE; Öztürk, Abdullah (Elsevier BV, 2020-09-01)
alpha-Fe2O3/TiO2 heterogeneous composites were synthesized by the sol-gel process to increase the photocatalytic activity of TiO2. The structural, morphological, and optical characteristics of the composites were determined by X-ray diffraction, scanning electron microscope, and UV-vis diffuse reflectance spectroscopy. Results revealed that the incorporation of alpha-Fe2O3 to TiO2 widened the visible light absorption ability of TiO2. It was realized that the calcination temperature plays a crucial role in m...
A new method for processing of monazite and examination of the products by X-ray analysis
Kizilyalli, Meral; Welch, Alastair J. (Elsevier BV, 1987-1)
Sintering reactions of lanthanide orthophosphates with Na2CO3 gave the expected products (Na3PO4 and Ln2O3) with stoichiometric amounts of Na2CO3. When less than the theoretical amounts of Na2CO3 were used, two intermediate products eventually characterized by X-ray diffraction as Na3Ln(PO4)2 and Ln3PO7 were detected. Application of the sintering method to naturally occurring phosphates, particularly the mineral monazite, proved to be very successful. By using the optimum amount of Na2CO3 to form Na3Ln(PO4)...
The orientation dependent electromigration induced healing on the surface cracks and roughness caused by the uniaxial compressive stresses in single crystal metallic thin films
Ogurtani, Tarik Omer (AIP Publishing, 2009-09-01)
The first order unified linear instability analysis (ULISA) of the governing equation for evolutions of surfaces and interfaces under the capillary, electromigration, and elastostatic forces including the thermomigration (Soret effect) is developed very recently by the author. In the present application of the theory, the concurrent effects of uniaxial applied stresses and the electrostatic field on the sidewall morphological evolution of a single crystal thin metallic film are explored by dynamic computer ...
The Electronıc-Structure Of In1-Xgaxp Alloy By The Recursıon Method
ELHASAN, M; Tomak, Mehmet (Springer Science and Business Media LLC, 1988-03-01)
The electronic structure calculation of In1−x Ga x P alloy using the recursion method is reported. A five-orbitals,sp 3 s *, per atom model is used in the tight-binding representation of the Hamiltonian. The local densities of states are calculated for In, Ga and P sites in a cluster of 216 atoms. The results are in reasonably good agreement with previous calculations.
