Polycrystalline BaTiO3 thin films have been prepared by hydrothermal reaction with sputter-deposited nanostructured reactive Ti templates designed to control net diffusion direction and distance. Templates were prepared in two morphologies, i.e., planar and nanopillar. The samples produced from flat templates showed sluggish transformation kinetics and an eventual termination of reaction without fully consuming the Ti metal. Templates with pillar morphology, on the other hand, could be transformed to phase-pure BaTiO3, independent of the template thickness. In the as-precipitated state, those films revealed a permittivity of similar to 1000 and loss tangent values around 0.1 with mild dispersion in the kilohertz frequency range. Annealing these films under forming gas containing 1 vol% H-2 balance N-2 for 3 h at 200 degrees C decreased high-field losses to 0.06 and reduced dispersion. Mn incorporation as an in situ acceptor dopant was also explored. Addition of Mn during hydrothermal treatment further improved the electrical properties. Annealing under the same postgrowth conditions virtually eliminated the frequency dispersion in the range of 1 kHz to 1 MHz, while maintaining permittivity values in the range of 350.

Temperature dependent band gap in SnS2xSe(2-2x) (x=0.5) thin films
Delice, S.; Isik, M.; Gullu, H. H.; Terlemezoglu, M.; Surucu, O. Bayrakli; Hasanlı, Nızamı; Parlak, Mehmet (Elsevier BV, 2020-08-01)
Structural and optical properties of SnS2xSe(2-2x) thin films grown by magnetron sputtering method were investigated for composition of x = 0.5 (SnSSe) in the present study. X-ray diffraction, energy dispersive X-ray spectroscopy, atomic force microscopy and scanning electron microscopy methods were used for structural characterization while temperature-dependent transmission measurements carried out at various temperatures in between 10 and 300 K were accomplished for optical investigations. X-ray diffract...
Flow transitions and flow localization in large-strain deformation of magnesium alloy
Sagapuram, Dinakar; Efe, Mert; Trumble, Kevin P.; Chandrasekar, Srinivasan (Elsevier BV, 2016-04-06)
Understanding transitions from homogeneous to localized flow, and mechanisms underlying flow localization, is of paramount importance for deformation processing of magnesium. In this study, a shear based deformation method is utilized for imposing large strains (similar to 1), under controllable strain rates (10-10(5)/s) and temperatures (80-300 degrees C), in order to examine flow patterns in a magnesium alloy. Based on microstructure characterization, deformation twinning is suggested to contribute to the...
Mechanical behaviour of Al2O3-ZrO2 minicomposite reinforced glass matrix optomechanical composite
Dericioğlu, Arcan Fehmi (Informa UK Limited, 2003-08-01)
To understand the effect of a 'mesh-structured reinforcement' on the optical and mechanical properties of optomechanical composites, a unidirectional Al2O3 fibre-ZrO2 matrix minicomposite reinforced glass matrix optomechanical composite has been fabricated. By regular alignment of the minicomposites in the glass matrix as part of the 'mesh structure' a high degree of optical transparency is obtained in the composite; this transparency is proportional to its 'optical window' regions. The mesh structured rein...
Improvement of fracture resistance in a glass matrix optomechanical composite by minicomposite unit bridging
Dericioğlu, Arcan Fehmi (Elsevier BV, 2005-10-15)
Minicomposite unit bridging, which was experimentally determined to be the dominant toughening mechanism resulting in the R-curve behavior of the Al2O3-ZrO2 minicomposite-reinforced glass matrix optomechanical composite, was studied quantitatively using luminescence spectroscopy. Applied stress induced shift of the luminescence bands of the minicomposite reinforcement was calibrated. Using the experimentally obtained calibration curve, axial stresses could be mapped along the minicomposite embedded in the g...
Micropatterned lead zirconium titanate thin films
Vartuli, JS; Özenbaş, Ahmet Macit; Chun, CM; Trau, M; Aksay, IA (Cambridge University Press (CUP), 2003-05-01)
Micropatterning of Pb(Zr0.52Ti0.48)O-3 (PZT) thin films with line features as small as 350 nm was demonstrated through capillary molding of organometallic solutions within the continuous channels of an elastomeric mold. Despite the large stresses that develop during the evaporation of the solvent, pyrolysis of the organics, and the densification and crystallization of the inorganic gel, the patterned crystalline PZT films were crack-free and mechanically robust. Flawless regions as large as I cm(2) were obt...
