Phytate and trace element concentrations of the total daily diet of upper social groups in Taiwan were determined by P-31 FT NMR spectroscopy and by instrumental neutron activation analysis, respectively. Results of 15 samples are 2.21 +/- 0.71 g of phytate/kg of dry diet with the range 1.07-3.76 g/kg. The molar ratios of phytate to Zn and Ca were calculated, and bioavailabilities of these elements are discussed.

SUPERCRITICAL-FLUID EXTRACTION OF CARBOXYLIC AND FATTY-ACIDS FROM AGARICUS SPP MUSHROOMS
ABDULLAH, MI; YOUNG, JC; GAMES, DE (American Chemical Society (ACS), 1994-03-01)
Material obtained by the CO2 supercritical fluid extraction (SFE) of the wild and cultivated mushrooms Agaricus silvicola and Agaricus bisporus, respectively, was analyzed by g chromatography (GC)-mass spectrometry and GC-Fourier transform infrared spectrometry. SFE gave results comparable with classical extraction techniques for free fatty acids and esters but with fewer manipulative steps and also resulted in the characterization of acids not previously reported from these sources. The organic acids ident...
Chemoenzymatic Conversion of Linoleic Acid into Conjugated Linoleic Acid
Demir, Ayhan Sıtkı; Talpur, Farah N. (American Chemical Society (ACS), 2010-02-10)
An efficient chemoenzymatic method for preparing conjugated linoleic acid (CLA) using free linoleic acid (LA) as a substrate is described. In the first step, LA was transformed into 10-hydroxy-cis-12-octadecenoic acid (HA) by the whole cells of Lactobacillus plantarum after 48 h of incubation. The preincubation of whole cells with 0.03% LA resulted in a better yield of HA (480 mg/g) compared to cells grown without LA. In a second fast microwave step, HA was converted to cis-9, trans-11-octadecadienoic acid ...
Trace level determination of beryllium in natural and flavored mineral waters after pre-concentration using activated carbon
KILINÇ, ERSİN; Bakirdere, Sezgin; YAMAN, MEHMET (Informa UK Limited, 2011-01-01)
The concentrations of beryllium (Be) in natural and flavored mineral water samples were determined by flame atomic absorption spectrophotometer (FAAS) after pre-concentration based on the complexation of Be(+2) with a mixture of acetylacetone (pentane-2,4-dione) plus morin (3,5,7,2',4'-pentaoxyflavone) and adsorption on activated carbon. The adsorbed complex was eluted with 1.5 ml of 2.0 M HNO(3) and evaporated to dryness. After adding 1.5 ml of 2 M HNO(3) and centrifuging, Be in acid solution was determine...
Phase transition of chemically synthesized FePt nanoparticles under high pressure
ŞİMŞEK, TELEM; Karci, Ozgur; ÖZCAN, ŞADAN (The Scientific and Technological Research Council of Turkey, 2018-01-01)
We present the results of a study related to phase transformation of chemically synthesized FePt nanoparticles under high pressure from face-centered cubic into face-centered tetragonal structure. As-synthesized nanoparticles are around 4.5 nm and show superparamagnetic behavior at 300 K. After annealing under 60 bar pressure of hydrogen at 400 degrees C for 2 h, nanoparticles exhibit strong ferromagnetic behavior with 5391 Oe coercivity. Results show that high-pressure annealing lowers the decomposition te...
DETERMINATION OF SELENIUM IN DIET BY ZEEMAN EFFECT GRAPHITE-FURNACE ATOMIC-ABSORPTION SPECTROMETRY FOR CALCULATION OF DAILY DIETARY INTAKES
ARI, U; Volkan, Mürvet; ARAS, NK (American Chemical Society (ACS), 1991-12-01)
The selenium content of Turkish diets was determined by Zeeman effect graphite furnace atomic absorption spectrometry (GFAAS). Samples, collected from two different socioeconomic groups by duplicate portion technique, were digested with concentrated nitric acid in acid bombs, and hydrogen peroxide was added for complete oxidation. The digested solutions were then analyzed by GFAAS with the nickel chemical modifier addition. The detection limit for Se(VI) was 10.5 ng/mL for aqueous standard solutions. Averag...
