Due to high production cost and prevention of environmental pollution, it is important to reduce the amount of nitrogen (N) fertilizer used on wheat (Triticum aestivum L.). The aim of this study was to evaluate N use of 6 x 6 diallel wheat F-2 progenies and parental lines at low (NO, no N fertilizer) and high (N+, 160 kg N ha(-1)) N levels. Significant differences were found between N+ and NO application in grain N content, grain N yield, N use efficiency for grain N yield (NUEgn), and N use efficiency for grain yield (NUEgy). The cultivar '84CTO4' showed positive and high general combining ability (GCA) effects for all traits at low N level. Also, it was the best combiner for all traits at both N levels. The cultivar 'Genc 99' was the best parent for GCA effects for grain yield and NUEgy. Hybrids 'Genc 99 x 84CZT04' and '84CZT04 x Weaver' showed positive specific combining ability (SCA) effects for all investigated traits at low and high N levels. Variety '84CZT04 x Apogee' had the best SCA effects for all traits at low N level. Overall, the data suggest that it is probable to select promising lines suitable for low N conditions by the crossing of high N use efficient parents.

Photosystem II and cellular membrane stability evaluation in hexaploid wheat seedlings under salt stress conditions
Ozalp, VC; Öktem, Hüseyin Avni; Naqvi, SMS; Yucel, M (Informa UK Limited, 2000-01-01)
Salinity limits crop production in large areas of the world. The application of in vitro Photosystem II (PS-II) activity measurements to screen hexaploid wheat (Triticum aestivum, L.) genotypes for NaCl tolerance has been investigated by comparing their responses under stress and control (no added NaCl) conditions. One of the four cultivars used in the study was 'Kharchia' known for its high salt tolerance. Wheat seedlings were grown hydroponically in environmental chambers and treated with a range of NaCl ...
Simultaneous dissolution and uptake of nutrients in microalgal treatment of the secondarily treated digestate
Ulgudur, Nilufer; Bayramoğlu, Tuba Hande; Demirer, Goksel N. (Elsevier BV, 2019-11-01)
Anaerobic digestion processes result in large volumes of digestates which still require the development of elaborate and viable management options to improve the sustainability of these processes. Coupling of secondary anaerobic treatment with a microalgal nutrient removal process may serve benefits such as residual biogas and associated greenhouse gas capture from the digestate content, microalgal biomass build-up and its further valorization. This study investigated the applicability a microalgal nutrient...
Ionic liquid pretreatment allows utilization of high substrate loadings in enzymatic hydrolysis of biomass to produce ethanol from cotton stalks
Haykir, Nazife Isik; Bakir, Ufuk (Elsevier BV, 2013-11-01)
To enhance the enzymatic conversion of cotton stalks to glucose at high substrate loadings and subsequently to produce ethanol, biomass was subjected to ionic liquid and alkaline pretreatments. Ionic liquid, 1-ethyl-3-methylimidazolium acetate (EMIMAc), which reduced biomass crystallinity, was effective in improving the conversion of cotton stalks to glucose (82-85%) regardless of the substrate loading used during enzymatic hydrolysis. On the other hand, the glucose yield decreased from 67% to 55% with an i...
Nitrogen fertilizer leaching from cropped and irrigated sandy soil in Central Turkey
Ünlü, Kahraman; Yurteri, C (Wiley, 1999-12-01)
Pollution of ground water caused by excessive and uncontrolled use of nitrogen fertilizer is worrying. A recent example of such pollution has been observed in an agricultural basin in the province of Nevsehir, Turkey, where up to 900 kg ha(-1) nitrogen fertilizer is used for growing potatoes in sandy soils under irrigation. Using nitrogen fertilizer in amounts that guarantee large yields without polluting ground water is essential. We present results of field experiments and numerical simulations involving ...
Biogas production from broiler manure, wastewater treatment plant sludge, and greenhouse waste by anaerobic co-digestion
Sarikaya, E.; Demirer, Göksel Niyazi (2013-07-01)
Inappropriate management of organic wastes can cause serious damage to the environment by polluting water and air, which can lower the quality of life. Ammonia and greenhouse gases (CH4 and CO2) emitted from the waste storage units can pollute the air. Inappropriate application of nitrogen and phosphorus on fields as manure can lead to eutrophication of surface water resources and pollution of soil and ground water. Conversion of the organic wastes to biogas through anaerobic digestion will, however, reduce...
