Waters of the eastern Mediterranean portray an unusual pattern of stable isotope composition compared with other evaporitic systems: an increase in O-18 concentration up to value of delta(18)O = +2.2 parts per thousand is not matched by a commensurate increase of deuterium. It is shown that this unusual pattern is an expression of the ''medi-terranean'' location of the sea, where the air-sea interaction with relatively dry and isotopically depleted continental air masses dominates the evaporation process in winter and where the diluting meteoric waters are extremely depleted in the heavy isotopes. As a result, the slope of the evaporation line in delta(H-2)-delta(O-18) space is lower than in other marine systems, whereas the mixing line between the meteoric waters and the seawater is very steep. This pattern provides an independent method for the estimation of the evaporation E and freshwater influx terms M of the water balance of the Mediterranean Sea. In winter the ratio of evaporation to freshwater input is found to be E/M = 1.20, whereas in summer this ratio E/M = 1.83.

Assessment of the trophic status of the Mersin bay waters, Northeastern Mediterranean
Kaptan, Mehmet Salih; Tuğrul, Süleyman; Department of Chemical Oceanography (2013)
Identifying the spatial and temporal variability of eutrophication related indicators such as Chlorophyll-a (Chl-a), oxygen saturation (DO%), dissolved inorganic nitrogen (DIN) and total phosphorus (TP), as a measure of the potential pressures and productivity, were measured within the Mersin Bay, a wide shelf region of the Cilician Basin located in the Northeastern Mediterranean Sea. This study aims to characterize the trophic status of the water masses in the eastern shelf waters of the bay fed by river d...
The Effects of heat treatment on microstructure, hardness and fatigue behavior of (AMS5659) 15-5 precipitation hardenable stainless steel
Gören, Şahin; Gürbüz, Rıza; Department of Metallurgical and Materials Engineering (2018)
In this study, effects of heat treatment parameters on microstructure, hardness and fatigue behavior of 15-5 precipitation hardenable stainless steels have been examined. Heat treatments have been conducted in three different steps homogenization, solutionizing and aging treatment at different temperatures and times. Microstructural analysis in terms of grain size and chemical composition analysis have been performed by optical and scanning electron microscope (SEM). Then, hardness measurements were applied...
The effect of cold and warm core eddies on the distribution and stoichiometry of dissolved nutrients in the northeastern Mediterranean
Yılmaz, Ayşen (1998-10-01)
The nutrient distribution and phytoplankton production in the Levantine Sea of the eastern Mediterranean are principally determined by the duration and the intensity of deep winter mixing in the quasi-permanent anticyclonic and cyclonic eddies. In the seasons of stratification, a nutrient-poor aphotic layer is formed between the euphotic zone and the nutricline; interestingly, it consistently extends down to depths of about 29.0-29.05 isopycnal surfaces, but nearly vanishes in the core of the cyclonic Rhode...
The effect of strain rate and temperature on deep drawing for different constitutive relations
Gökşen, Seçkin; Darendeliler, Haluk; Department of Mechanical Engineering (2019)
In this study, the effects of strain rate and temperature on deep drawing process are investigated by considering different yield criteria and hardening models. For this purpose, various punch velocity and temperature values are considered using 1 mmthick DKP6112 and AZ31 sheet materials. The results are compared according to thickness strain distribution and punch force obtained by a commercial finite element software. To express constitutive relations of corresponding materials for different strain rate a...
The defect state of Yb-doped ZnO nanoparticles using thermoluminescence study
Hasanlı, Nızamı (Elsevier BV, 2019-09-01)
Shallow trapping centers in Yb-doped ZnO nanoparticles were determined using thermoluminescence (TL) measurements applied in the 10-300 K temperature region. Undoped and Yb-doped ZnO nanoparticles were synthesized by sol-gel method. TL glow curve of undoped nano-particles presented three peaks around 56, 108 and 150 K whereas one additional peak around 83 K was observed in the TL curve of Yb-doped ZnO nano-particles. The increase of Yb concentration in the nanoparticles increased the TL intensity of this ad...
