A large number of surficial sediment samples (75 grab samples, one boomerang core, four box cores) as well as primary productivity measurements have been used to estimate the rates of sediment accumulation in the Sea of Marmara; using an empirical expression for the relationship between surface productivity and organic carbon content of the sediment (MOLLER-SUESS formula). It was found that calculated low sedimentation rates occurred on the inner southern Marmara shelf (ave. 8 cm 1000 y-1) where the primary production was relatively high (ave. 161 gC m-2 y-1); and vice versa, high sedimentation rates were calculated for the southwestern shelf (123 cm 1000 y-1), an area with very low primary productivity (64 gC m-2 y-1). This discrepancy among the values, is probably due to the combined effects of the distinctive and peculiar oceanography of the Sea of Marmara (well stratified flow, strong horizontal transport, and varying conditions for mineralization of organic matter etc.).

Parameterization of iron and manganese cycling in the Black Sea suboxic and anoxic environment
Konovalov, S; Samodurov, A; Oguz, T; Ivanov, L (Elsevier BV, 2004-12-01)
New and published data on the distribution and speciation of manganese and iron in seawater are analyzed to identify and parameterize major biogeochemical processes of their cycling within the suboxic (similar to15.6less than or equal tosigma(t)less than or equal tosimilar to16.2) and anoxic layers (sigma(t)less than or equal tosimilar to16.2) of the Black Sea. A steady-state transport-reaction model is applied to reveal layering and parameterize kinetics of redox and dissolution/precipitation processes. Pr...
Density currents in the two-layer flow: an example of Dardanelles outflow
Besiktepe, ST (Elsevier BV, 2003-06-01)
Observations from hydrographic surveys are used to describe the density current flowing through the Dardanelles strait into the Marmara Sea. Aegean water plunges below the surface and flows into the Marmara Sea. This flow joins into the Marmara Sea as a negatively buoyant plume and sinks through the deeper parts. Seasonal variation in the incoming water density results in the observing mainly two different forms of the density current in this area. These two forms are boundary currents and intrusion. Bounda...
Simulations of the Black Sea pelagic ecosystem by 1-D, vertically resolved, physical-biochemical models
Oguz, T; Ducklow, HW; Malanotte-Rizzoli, P; Murray, JW (Wiley, 1998-09-01)
The present paper summarizes the results of several simulations of the central Black Sea pelagic food web using three different 1-D, physical-biochemical, water column process models. The most simplified, five-compartment version is used to explore the robust biological features of the ecosystem and the role of upper-layer physics on the evolution of the euphotic zone biological processes. The other models, introducing additional biological complexities, show how these biologically structured models become ...
Energy-based top-down and bottom-up relationships between fish community energy demand or production and phytoplankton across lakes at a continental scale
Bartrons, Mireia; Mehner, Thomas; Argillier, Christine; Beklioğlu, Meryem; Blabolil, Petr; Hesthagen, Trygve; Sweden, Kerstin Holmgren; Jeppesen, Erik; Krause, Teet; Podgornik, Samo; Volta, Pietro; Winfield, Ian J.; Brucet, Sandra (Wiley, 2020-04-01)
Fish community feeding and production rates may differ between lakes despite similar fish biomass levels because of differences in size structure and local temperature. Therefore, across-lake comparisons of the strength and direction of top-down and bottom-up fish-phytoplankton relationships should consider these factors. We used the metabolic theory of ecology to calculate size- and temperature-corrected community energy demand (CEDom) and community production (CP) of omnivorous fishes in 227 European lake...
The role of mesoscale processes controlling biological variability in the Black Sea coastal waters: inferences from SeaWIFS-derived surface chlorophyll field
Oguz, T; Deshpande, AG; Malanotte-Rizzoli, P (Elsevier BV, 2002-06-01)
Several different time series of chlorophyll images from the 1997-2000 Seaviewing, Wide Field-of-view Sensor data set have been analysed to gain a perspective on the dynamical and biological variability in the Black Sea, particularly oil its northwestern shelf region and along the Anatolian coastal zone. The images are interpreted in terms of documenting the close link between biological production and physical dynamics of the boundary system, and of emphasizing the role of eddy processes on controlling mes...
