Successful aging (SA) has been conceptualized in a number of ways. Despite increasing research into how laypersons define SA, few studies capturing lay perspectives of SA in younger cohorts and in non-English speaking countries have been undertaken. The current study examines cross-cultural perspectives of SA in young (aged 18-35), lay adults from a variety of continental European countries and Turkey. Participants were recruited via snowball sampling from social network sites and invited to participate in an online survey. Persons between 18-35 years from Belgium, Estonia, Germany, Netherlands, Romania, Switzerland, or Turkey were included. Respondents (total: 390; Belgian: 32; Estonian: 96; German: 76; Romanian: 47; Swiss: 39; Dutch: 30; Turkish: 70), were primarily women (56.4%) and students (66.2%), with an average age of 24.1 years (SD 3.7). Personal resources, social and active engagement all emerged as dominant themes across countries, but were articulated in subtly different ways in the participant countries. Positive perspectives, desirable attributes and satisfaction themes were intertwined within themes of acceptance and engagement. The current study provides a first step in the inclusion of geographic and cultural diversity into the SA literature. These results suggest that layperson conceptualizations of SA have broad-sweeping similarities, but further research is required to articulate the nuance of cultural influences on SA.

TD-gammon revisited: integrating invalid actions and dice factor in continuous action and observation space
Usta, Engin Deniz; Alpaslan, Ferda Nur; Department of Computer Engineering (2018)
After TD-Gammon's success in 1991, the interest in game-playing agents has risen significantly. With the developments in Deep Learning and emulations for older games have been created, human-level control for Atari games has been achieved and Deep Reinforcement Learning has proven itself to be a success. However, the ancestor of DRL, TD-Gammon, and its game Backgammon got out of sight, because of the fact that Backgammon's actions are much more complex than other games (most of the Atari games has 2 or 4 di...
An analysis of living environments of the elderly and a project for assisted living in Ankara
Erbaş, İrem; İmamoğlu, Vacit; Department of Architecture (2006)
Ageing has become a significant research area in the last few decades. The most important reason that makes ageing issue significant is the increasing rate of the older indviduals within the population all around the world. Statistical data on ageing both in Turkey and in the world reveals that, in the near future, the number of population over 65 will increase dramatically. It can be asserted that there will be an urgent need of specifically designed accommodation for this portion of the population. Hence,...

Analysis of success factors in e-government transformation in Turkey: are these factors really the causes of success?
Iskender, Gokhan; Özkan Yıldırım, Sevgi (2015-09-01)
This study analyses the relationship between the e-government transformation success in Turkey and the 18 success factors commonly assumed to be the causes of transformation success in the literature. The study uses a quantitative methodology previously developed by the same researchers, which considers transformation success as the dependent variable and the 18 success factors as the independent variables in a relational model and applies correlation, regression and factor analyses to the collected data to...
Women's Experiences of Ageing: Social Participation of Grandmothers Providing Daycare
Demirkol, Begüm; Aybars, Ayşe İdil; Department of Sociology (2022-8)
Considering the demographic changes in Turkey, it has become inevitable to address the social dimension of aging. This study aims to show the effect of daycare provided to their grandchildren by aging women on their social participation. The concept of social participation is examined under three headings: community life, interpersonal relations, and leisure time activities. This study, conducted in light of Feminist Standpoint Theory, will show the effect of unpaid care work on social participation, which ...
