The genus Salvia L. (sage), which belongs to the tribe Mentheae of the subfamily Nepetoideae within the family Lamiaceae, is well-known for its medicinal, ornamental, culinary and hallucinogenic uses. The section Hemisphace Benth. of this genus is respresented in Turkey by three species. The present study is conducted on two morphologically similar Salvia species belonging to this section: Salvia napifolia Jacq. and S. russellii Benth. (excluding S. verticillata L.). For this purpose, the pericarp ultrastructure of these species is investigated in detail with the help of light and transmission electron microscopy (TEM). Morphometric characters are analyzed using one-way Analysis of Variance (ANOVA) with Tukey’s honestly significant difference (HSD) post-hoc test for multiple comparisons. The taxonomic potential of pericarp characteristics is discussed. The most prominent traits are the thickness of the pericarp, mesocarp and sclerenchyma region that permit the separation of the species studied. Myxocarpy (mucilage formation) is recognized on the surface of the wetted mericarps of both species. Mucilaginous cells reveal a moderate reaction but S. napifolia is of a somewhat thicker mucilaginous layer, about 0.20-0.34 mm. This study represents the first comprehensive findings on the pericarp ultrastructure of the species examined.

Mericarp morphology and its systematic implications for the genus Salvia L. section Hymenosphace Benth. (Lamiaceae) in Turkey
Kahraman, Ahmet; Celep, Ferhat; Doğan, Musa; Guerin, Greg R.; Bagherpour, Safi (2011-03-01)
Mericarp morphology of 15 taxa of Salvia L. section Hymenosphace Benth. in Turkey were investigated by light microscopy (LM) and scanning electron microscopy (SEM) to evaluate the utility of mericarp characters in systematic studies. Mericarps ranged from 2.50 to 5.38 mm in length and 2.04 to 4.70 mm in width. Mericarp shape was prolate-spheroid or near spherical with a length-to-width ratio of 1.02-1.48. Transverse sections of the mericarps were rounded or rounded-trigonous. Mericarp surfaces presented col...
Pollen morphology of the genus Salvia L. (Lamiaceae) in Turkey
ÖZLER, HÜLYA; PEHLİVAN, SEVİL; Kahraman, Ahmet; Doğan, Musa; Celep, Ferhat; Baser, Birol; Yavru, Ahter; Bagherpour, Safi (2011-01-01)
Pollen grains of 30 taxa of the genus Salvia, belonging to sections Salvia, Horminum, Drymosphace, Plethiosphace and Hemisphace from Turkey were examined by light (LM) and scanning electron microscopy (SEM). Detailed pollen morphological characteristics are provided for these taxa. Among the studied taxa, S. verticillata subsp. verticillata from sect. Hemisphace has the smallest pollen grains, and S. pachystachys from sect. Salvia possesses the largest ones. The basic shape of the pollen grains in most taxa...
REDISCOVERY OF SALVIA FREYNIANA BORNM. (LAMIACEAE), A CRITICALLY ENDANGERED SPECIES IN TURKEY
Bagherpour, Safi; Celep, Ferhat; Doğan, Musa; Kahraman, Ahmet (2009-12-01)
In 1890, Salvia freyniana Bornm., an endemic species of Turkey, was first collected and described by J.F. Bornmueller in 1892. While revising the genus occurring in Turkey based on specimens collected from Yenipazar, south of Yozgat (Turkey in 1892), it was discovered once again in 2006. The diagnostic morphological characters of this rare endemic species are discussed. Details of fruiting material and pollen micromorphology arc given for the first time. Moreover, an emended and expanded description, distri...

The taxa of the genus Salvia L. (Lamiaceae) used in this study were collected from their natural habitats in Turkey. In this paper, the number, size and morphology of somatic chromosomes of 22 Turkish taxa of Salvia, namely S. bracteata Banks & Sol., S. fruticosa Mill., S. huberi Hedge, S. hydrangea DC. ex Benth., S. nemorosa L. and S. pomifera L. (2n=14), S. adenocaulon P.H. Davis and S. aucheri Benth. subsp. canescens Boiss. & Heldr., (2n=18), S. argentea L., S. frigida Boiss., S. palestina Benth., S. poc...
COMPARATIVE MORPHOLOGY, ANATOMY AND PALYNOLOGY OF TWO SALVIA L. SPECIES (LAMIACEAE) AND THEIR TAXONOMIC IMPLICATIONS
Kahraman, Ahmet; Celep, Ferhat; Doğan, Musa (2009-06-01)
Morphological, anatomical and palynological characteristics of Salvia glutinosa L. and S. staminea Montbret & Aucher ex Bentham and their taxonomic importance are presented. Their expanded description and phenology are also given. The features of stems, leaves, calyces, corolla and nutlets have been found to be significant to distinguish the species. Mesophyll structure, distribution of stomata on upper epidermis, size of stomata on lower epidermis, shape of vascular structure in midrib, and number of vascu...
