Steel structures comprise a good share of the industrial construction in Turkey. Accordingly, developing systematic means for structural steel design would directly translate into reduced engineering time in a project. American Institute of Steel Construction (AISC) provides practicing engineers with a design manual to facilitate the design process. The design tables in this manual, however, cannot be used in Turkey. Turkish Structural Steel Code has recently been adopted from AISC Specification for Structural Steel Buildings but European not American steel sections are used in the Turkish steel construction industry. Hence, design tables developed for European steel sections would significantly aid the structural engineers in Turkey. The objective of this thesis is to develop a design manual similar to AISC Steel Construction Manual for commonly used European wideflange steel sections used in the Turkish steel industry. The design manual will also serve as a reference that can be consulted to verify the engineering calculations in Turkey.

Design Tables for Turkish and American Structural Steel Specifications
Çelik, Ozan Cem; Al Nahawi, Zaid Mohammed H.; Topkaya, Cem (Ozan Cem Celik, 2021-9-01)
Recently updated Turkish Structural Steel Specification [Ministry of Environment and Urban Planning, 2018] has been adopted from American Institute of Steel Construction (AISC) Specification for Structural Steel Buildings [AISC, 2016]. To facilitate the design of steel structures in Turkey and elsewhere, where European steel sections are used together with AISC Specification, design tables similar to those in AISC Steel Construction Manual [AISC, 2017] providing the capacities of members that use European s...
Seismic performance assessment of wide beam infill joist block frame structures in Turkey
Karaaslan, Enes; Erberik, Murat Altuğ; Department of Civil Engineering (2015)
Wide-beam frame buildings are prevalent in Turkey since 1980’s due to their advantageous characteristics such as ease of construction, construction speed and cost efficiency. However; according to recent experimental studies, wide beam systems demonstrate poor energy dissipation capacity under earthquake. The capacities of the wide-beams may not fully developed at the beam-column joints. The beam reinforcements that do not anchor to the core area of the columns may not reach their full capacities unless spe...
A Study on the price escalation system in public construction contracts in Turkey
Ercan, Muhammed; Dikmen Toker, İrem; Birgönül, Mustafa Talat; Department of Civil Engineering (2017)
The construction industry has a major role in the development of Turkish economy. The construction sector contributes 6-8 % of the gross domestic product of Turkey. At the same time, public investments comprise an important portion in the Turkish construction sector. Medium to large construction projects generally take over a year for completion and cost of materials and labor that are used as resources in construction projects often increase during implementation of construction projects. On the other hand...
Evaluation of performance based displacement limits for reinforced concrete columns under flexure
Solmaz, Taylan; Yakut, Ahmet; Department of Civil Engineering (2010)
Reinforced concrete frame buildings are the most common type of constructions in Turkey which are exposed to various types of forces during their lifetime. Seismic performance of reinforced concrete frame buildings is dominated by columns which can be classified as primary members of these structures. When current codes are considered, all of them contain several provisions in order to implement reliable seismic performances of reinforced concrete columns. In order to evaluate the accuracy of these provisio...
Seismic performance assessment of confined masonry buildings
Çitiloğlu, Cihan; Erberik, Murat Altuğ; Department of Civil Engineering (2016)
Although it is a known fact that confined masonry construction has many advantages over unreinforced masonry construction, its application has been very limited in Turkish construction practice. One of the reasons for this issue is that the seismic regulations in Turkey do not explicitly enforce or even encourage the use of confined masonry structural systems. Now, being on the verge of releasing a new version of the Turkish seismic code, it seems to be an appropriate time to adapt confined ma-sonry to the ...
