This paper presents a practical workflow on static aeroelastic problems with extreme deflections. The aim of this study is to achieve a fast, yet robust method to calculate the change of the aerodynamic parameters as well as to ensure structural integrity of a wing deforming under aerodynamic loads. To predict static aeroelastic behavior of a high aspect ratio wing, calculations are performed on very fine grids at a relatively large number of flight conditions. Fluid calculations are performed with FLUENT on viscous meshes containing highly skewed cells, while structural analysis is performed by MSC.NASTRAN on 10-noded tetrahedral meshes. Aerodynamic loads on a wing surface are transferred to structural analysis and deformations are transferred to aerodynamic analysis to repeat the aerodynamic calculations. This iterative process between the aerodynamic analysis and structural analysis is continued until a convergence criterion is met. Deformation of the wing surface is transferred to the fluid mesh using spring analogy. In order to achieve high quality fluid meshes after deformation and to reduce calculation time different methods are used. As the basis of the spring analogy, segment springs and ball vertex methods are utilized. Then, to reduce computer time, a SOR type solver and a layered solver are employed. Last improvement involves an initial guess of the deformations inside fluid mesh. As a result, we manage to perform static aeroelastic calculations on the wing geometry in a reasonably shorter time. © 2012 by the American Institute of Aeronautics and Astronautics, Inc. Graph-based multilevel temporal video segmentation
Sakarya, Ufuk; TELATAR, ZİYA (Springer Science and Business Media LLC, 2008-11-01)
This paper presents a graph-based multilevel temporal video segmentation method. In each level of the segmentation, a weighted undirected graph structure is implemented. The graph is partitioned into clusters which represent the segments of a video. Three low-level features are used in the calculation of temporal segments' similarities: visual content, motion content and shot duration. Our strength factor approach contributes to the results by improving the efficiency of the proposed method. Experiments sho...
FLUID STRUCTURE INTERACTION BASED ON PANEL METHOD AND GEOMETRICALLY NONLINEAR STRUCTURAL ANALYSIS
Sedat, Özöztürk; Kayran, Altan; Tuncer, İsmail Hakkı (null; 2015-09-10)
The article presents fluid-structure interaction methodology for the static aeroelastic coupling of aerostructures. A CFD and a FEM solver are coupled and the aeroelastic solution is iterated in order to obtain the steady state condition of the aerostructure. A three dimensional panel method is used as the CFD solver and MSC.Nastran is used as the finite element solver. In order to investigate large deflection effects, which are common in flexible aerostructures such as high aspect ratio wings, panel soluti...
Applied supervisory control for a flexible manufacturing system
Moor, Thomas; Schmidt, Klaus Verner; Perk, Sebastian (2010-12-01)
This paper presents a case study in the design and implementation of a discrete event system (DES) of real-world complexity. Our DES plant is a flexible manufacturing system (FMS) laboratory model that consists of 29 interacting components and is controlled via 107 digital signals. Regarding controller design, we apply a hierarchical and decentralised synthesis method from earlier work in order to achieve nonblocking and safe closed-loop behaviour. Regarding implementation, we discuss how digital signals tr...
DELAYED DETACHED-EDDY SIMULATION BASED PREDICTIONS OF BOUNDARY LAYER TRANSITION AND CAVITY FLOW NOISE
Yalçın, Özgür; Özyörük, Yusuf; Department of Aerospace Engineering (2021-11-1)
This dissertation investigates the boundary layer transition as well as the cavity flow noise prediction capabilities of a high-order in-house solver using various Delayed Detached-Eddy Simulation (DDES) frameworks. Before conducting the simulations, multiblock topology with a high-order overset grid technique is implemented into the solver, which makes mesh generation for complex geometries, such as the tunnel grids around blade sections, and cavity grids composed of two separate domains of the studied cas...
Inverse design of compressor cascades on parallel computers
Özhamam, M.; Eyi, Sinan (2002-01-01)
In this paper, the performance improvements of an inverse compressor cascade design are investigated. A Navier-Stokes code is used for flow analysis. A least-square optimization method is used to minimize pressure discrepancies between initial and target cascades. In optimization process, most of the CPU time is associated with the sensitivity analyses. Sensitivities are evaluated on parallel computers by using a finite difference approach. Results show that, analyzing sensitivities on parallel computers re...
