In normal working conditions it is possible to achieve sufficient attitude estimation accuracy for a satellite using regular Kalman filter algorithm. On the other hand, when there is a fault in the measurements, the Kalman filter fails in providing the required accuracy and may even collapse over time. In this paper, a Robust Kalman filtering method is proposed for the attitude estimation problem. By using the proposed method both the Extended Kalman Filter and Unscented Kalman Filter are modified and the new algorithms, which are robust against measurement malfunctions, are called Robust Extended Kalman Filter and Robust Unscented Kalman Filter, respectively. A multiple scale factor based adaptation scheme is preferred for adapting the filters so only the data of the faulty sensor is scaled and any unnecessary information loss is prevented. The proposed algorithms are demonstrated for attitude estimation of a small satellite and performances of these two robust Kalman filters are compared in case of different measurement faults. The application of the algorithm is discussed for small satellite missions where the attitude accuracy depends on a limited number of measurements. (C) 2013 European Control Association. RECONSTRUCTION OF PERMITTIVITY AND CONDUCTIVITY PROFILES OF A DIELECTRIC SLAB IN THE TIME DOMAIN BY DESCENT METHODS
ONDER, M; Kuzuoğlu, Mustafa (Institution of Engineering and Technology (IET), 1992-10-01)
An optimisation approach is presented for the problem of reconstructing the permittivity and conductivity profiles of a dielectric slab from the reflected and transmitted field data. The problem is treated as an optimal control problem where the norm of the difference of measured and calculated boundary data is minimised subject to the state equation governing the system. The original constrained optimisation problem is reduced to the evaluation of stationary points of an augmented functional which is obtai...
Optimization of well placement in complex carbonate reservoirs using artifical intelligence
Uraz, İrtek; Akın, Serhat; Department of Petroleum and Natural Gas Engineering (2004)
This thesis proposes a framework for determining the optimum location of an injection well by using an inference method, Artificial Neural Networks and a search algorithm to create a search space and locate the global maxima. Theoretical foundation of the proposed framework is followed by description of the field for case study. A complex carbonate reservoir, having a recorded geothermal production history is used to evaluate the proposed framework ( Kizildere Geothermal field, Turkey). In the proposed fram...
Optimum design of pın-jointed 3-D dome structures using global optimization techniques
Saraç, Yavuz; Hasançebi, Oğuzhan; Department of Civil Engineering (2005)
Difficult gradient calculations, converging to a local optimum without exploring the design space adequately, too much dependency on the starting solution, lacking capabilities to treat discrete and mixed design variables are the main drawbacks of conventional optimization techniques. So evolutionary optimization methods received significant interest amongst researchers in the optimization area. Genetic algorithms (GAs) and simulated annealing (SA) are the main representatives of evolutionary optimization m...
Tresca's yield criterion and linearly hardening rotating solid disks having hyperbolic profiles
Eraslan, Ahmet Nedim (Springer Science and Business Media LLC, 2004-12-01)
An analytical solution for the stress distribution in rotating hyperbolic solid disk is obtained under plane stress assumption. The analysis is based on Tresca's yield criterion, its associated flow rule and linear strain hardening material behavior. It is shown that the deformation behavior of the hyperbolic solid disk is different from that of the constant thickness disk. The plastic core consists of three different plastic regions with different mathematical forms of the yield criterion. Accordingly, thr...
A computational procedure for estimating residual stresses and secondary plastic flow limits in nonlinearly strain hardening rotating shafts
Eraslan, Ahmet Nedim (Springer Science and Business Media LLC, 2005-03-01)
A computational procedure to estimate the residual stress distributions and the limit angular speeds for avoiding secondary plastic deformation in nonlinearly strain hardening rotating elastic-plastic shafts is given. The model is based on von Mises yield condition, J(2) deformation theory and a Swift-type hardening law. The boundary value problem for the governing nonlinear differential equation is solved by a shooting method using Newton iterations with numerically approximated tangent. Solid as well as h...
