© 2020 IEEE.We present the analysis of a single-carrier massive MIMO system for the frequency selective Gaussian multi-user channel, in both uplink and downlink directions. We develop expressions for the achievable sum rate when there is spatial correlation among antennas at the base station. It is known that the channel matched filter precoder (CMFP) performs the best in a spatially uncorrelated downlink channel. However, we show that, in a spatially correlated downlink channel with two different correlation patterns and at high long-term average power, two other precoders have better performance. For the uplink channel, part of the equivalent noise in the channel goes away, and implementing two conventional equalizers leads to a better performance compared to the channel matched filter equalizer (CMFE). These results are verified for uniform linear and uniform planar arrays. In the latter, due to more correlation, the performance drop with a spatially correlated channel is larger, but the performance gain against channel matched filter precoder or equalizer is also bigger. In highly correlated cases, the performance can be a significant multiple of that of the channel matched filter precoder or equalizers.

Frame synchronization in OFDM systems
Gürsan, Hakan Yesari; Tuncer, Temel Engin; Department of Electrical and Electronics Engineering (2005)
In this thesis, we considered the problem of frame synchronization and channel estimation in Orthogonal Frequency Division Multiplexing (OFDM) systems. Since framing error may cause severe ISI and may disturb the orthogonality of the subcarriers, frame synchronization must be accomplished at the OFDM receiver. Furthermore, the effects of channel must be compensated to obtain the symbols accurately. We investigated several frame synchronization algorithms including a maximum likelihood (ML) synchronizer whic...
Frequency invariant beamforming and its application to wideband direction of arrival estimation
Babataş, Eren; Candan, Çağatay; Department of Electrical and Electronics Engineering (2008)
In this thesis the direction of arrival estimation of wideband signals using frequency invariant beamforming method is examined. The difficulty with the direction of arrival estimation of wideband signals is that it is not possible to obtain a single covariance matrix valid for the whole frequency spectrum of the signal. There are various methods proposed in the literature to overcome this difficulty. The common aim of all the methods is to obtain a composite covariance matrix for the overall band of the si...
Spatial modulation of THz beams for imaging applications
Altan, Hakan (null; 2015-10-16)
Techniques based on compressive sensing allow us to image fields at faster rates and at our labs in METU we have been experimenting with imaging based on spatial modulation of THz beams using single pixel detectors [1]. However these studies are based on discrete patterns using metal sheets. These techniques would benefit greatly if we could modulate the THz field. For example, optical modulators play a key role in optoelectronics and communication systems. Electro-optic, acousto-optic and thermo-optic effe...
Measurement correction of a set of analog sun sensors via neural network
Sozen, Semsettin Numan; Gokce, Murat; Yavuzyilmaz, Cagatay; Gulmammadov, Farid; Söken, Halil Ersin (2021-06-23)
A Neural Network (NN) based method to improve the accuracy of a set of analog Sun sensors is presented. Analog Sun Sensors are commonly used on satellites due to their reduced cost, small size and low power consumption. However, especially in Earth imaging satellites, they are prone to the Earth albedo effects. Magnitude and direction of albedo change depending on the reflection characteristics of the Earth's surface, position and attitude of the satellite and position of the Sun. The albedo may deteriorate...
Frequency diverse array antenna with periodic time modulated pattern in range and angle
Secmen, Mustafa; Demir, Şimşek; Hizal, Altunkan; Eker, Taylan (2007-09-27)
A general analysis of a frequency diverse transmit array antenna with a periodic modulated pattern in range, angle and time is presented. This antenna array system makes a continuous scanning in range and angle without using any phase shifters. The scanning is achieved using the frequency diversity by inserting a small amount of progressive frequency shift to each antenna element. The theory shows that there is the same modulation pattern in time, range and angle by taking the remaining two parameters fixed...
