The technique of alloying X120Mn12 steel substrate by plasma transferred arc process was used for development of a surface having high wear resistance. High carbon ferrochromium, ferrotungsten, and nickel-aluminum intermetallic powders were combined to form M7C3 carbides inside Fe-based composite surface coating. The phase transformations on these coated surfaces were comprehensively examined by using a combination of scanning electron microscopy (SEM) with energy dispersive spectrometry microanalysis, differential thermal analysis and X-ray diffraction (XRD). The microstructure studies of the superficial layers of the coating revealed a phase mixture of interdendritic austenite () phase structure and fine eutectic M7C3 carbides. The new formed coated surfaces were investigated by change of alloying elements (Cr, W, Ni), size of dendrites, change of eutectic reaction temperatures, hardness, carbide volume ratio of hard phases, and coating thickness as the processing parameters (powder feed rate and heat input). The dry sliding wear tests were performed on a pin on disc machine. The wear rates of the tests were affected by the powder feed rate, powder type, and applied load. Results revealed that processing powder combination used in this study (FeCrC-FeW-NiAl) provided the best option with superior combination of properties on surface of X120Mn12 steel substrate.

Genetic algorithms applied to Li+ ions contained in carbon nanotubes: An investigation using particle swarm optimization and differential evolution along with molecular dynamics
Chakraborti, N.; Das, S.; Jayakanth, R.; Pekoz, R.; Erkoç, Şakir (Informa UK Limited, 2007-01-01)
Empirical potentials based upon two and three body interactions were applied to the Li+ -C system, assuming the Li+ ions to be distributed inside high-symmetry, single walled carbon nanotubes of different chirality. Structural optimizations for various assemblages were conducted using evolutionary and genetic algorithms, where differential evolution and particle swarm optimization techniques worked satisfactorily. The results were compared with the outcome of some rigorous molecular dynamics simulations. Th...
TiB2-reinforced composite coating by gas tungsten arc welding
YILMAZ, SEVAL; Ozenbas, M. (Springer Science and Business Media LLC, 2009-06-01)
In situ synthesized TiB2-reinforced Fe-based coating was fabricated by gas tungsten arc welding (GTAW) on AISI-4340 steel substrate using cheaper Fe-Ti, Fe-Cr, Fe-W, Fe-B alloys and B2O3 powders. The effects of processing parameters on the coating were investigated experimentally. Primary dendrites of ferrite (alpha) phase and complex TiB2, Fe2B borides were detected at the coated surface. The experimental results show that either coated surface or interface microstructures were formed by the distribution o...
Excessive damage increase in dual phase steels under high strain rates and temperatures
Cobanoglu, Merve; Ertan, Rasim K.; Şimşir, Caner; Efe, Mert (SAGE Publications, 2020-09-01)
Damage formation in dual phase steels is a complex process and it may be sensitive to the deformation conditions and mechanisms. In this study, the damage parameter is measured and compared under quasi-static and industrial forming conditions (temperatures: 25 vs 200, 300 degrees C and strain rates: 10(-3)vs 10 s(-1)) for DP590 and DP800 steels. Resonance frequency and ultrasonic sound velocity techniques are utilized for the measurements to test the effectiveness and validity of each technique. At a given ...
FEM solution of natural convection flow in square enclosures under magnetic field
Turk, O.; Tezer, Münevver (Emerald, 2013-01-01)
Purpose - The purpose of the paper is to obtain finite element method (FEM) solution of steady, laminar, natural convection flow in inclined enclosures in the presence of an oblique magnetic field. The momentum equations include the magnetic effect, and the induced magnetic field due to the motion of the electrically conducting fluid is neglected. Quadratic triangular elements are used to ensure accurate approximation for second order derivatives of stream function appearing in the vorticity equation.
Surfactant-modified multiscale composites for improved tensile fatigue and impact damage sensing
Yesil, Sertan; Winkelrnann, Charles; Bayram, Göknur; La Saponara, Valeria (Elsevier BV, 2010-10-25)
This paper documents the mechanical and electrical performance of self-sensing conductive polymer composites prepared with a low-cost technique and small hardware, able to considerably improve the dispersion and the surface adhesion of multi-walled carbon nanotubes (CNTs) in epoxy resin with respect to amine-modified CNTs and as-received CNTs. Surface treatment of the CNTs is performed using hexamethylene diamine, or a mix of sulfuric and nitric acid, and one of two surfactants (for the diamine treatment on...
