In this presentation, we will describe a project recently funded by the National Science Foundation to develop Virtual Environments for Learning (VELs) for middle school science. VELs are designed to engage students in student-directed inquiry within the context of a complex task. All resources students need to address the task, including virtual scientific tools and scaled versions of information technologies, are contained within the environment. Design guidelines with examples drawn from two VELs will be presented.

Collaborative project-based learning: an integrative science and technological education project
Baser, Derya; Ozden, M. Yasar; Karaaslan, Hasan (2017-06-01)
Background: Blending collaborative learning and project-based learning (PBL) based on Wolff (2003) design categories, students interacted in a learning environment where they developed their technology integration practices as well as their technological and collaborative skills.Purpose: The study aims to understand how seventh grade students perceive a collaborative web-based science project in light of Wolff's design categories. The goal of the project is to develop their technological and collaborative s...
Engineering-based modelling experiences of elementary gifted students: An example of bridge construction
Karatas-Aydin, Firdevs Iclal; Işıksal Bostan, Mine (2023-03-01)
Background: Integrating science, technology, engineering and mathematics (STEM) in elementary classrooms has gained more attention with the current educational reforms. In this integration, finding ways to improve STEM knowledge and develop appropriate learning activities, and instructional strategies have been a challenge for educators. Although the similarities between gifted and engineering education have been emphasized, they have been not fully considered. Purpose: This study attempted to show how STEM...
Students nature of science views regarding gender, grade level and learning environment perceptions
Ebren Kuyumcu, Ebru; Sungur, Semra; Department of Elementary Science and Mathematics Education (2019)
The purpose of this study was to assess middle school students’ Nature of Science (NOS) views in relation to gender, grade level, and learning environment perceptions in science classes. The sample included 608 middle school students (289 boys and 319 girls) from Grade 7 (n = 286) and Grade at (n =322) attending public schools located in Yenimahalle and Sincan districts in Ankara. The Background Characteristics Survey, The Students’ Views of Nature of Science (SVNOS) and “What is Happening in this Class (WI...
Experience reflection modelling as a generative research method in an educational case for sustainable product design
Turhan, Senem; Doğan, Çağla (2014-01-01)
A generative research method, namely Experience Reflection Modelling (ERM), has been developed aimed at helping students explore and reflect upon design considerations for sustainability in the idea generation phase of a design process. ERM has been integrated into a product design for sustainability project as part of the design education in the Department of Industrial Design at Middle East Technical University. This paper begins by providing an overview of the generative research approach, explaining its...
Modeling technology integration of teachers: the role of school climate and leadership
Yurttav, Hakkı; Kondakçı, Yaşar; Department of Educational Sciences (2020)
The purpose of this study is to examine the relationship between school climate, leadership and technology integration of teachers. The variables of the study were classified at three levels as school climate, leadership and technology integration. Within the scope of the study, teacher collaboration, trust in school principal and enabling school structure are the school climate based variables, and technology leadership is the leadership-based variable. The population of the study consists of teachers work...
