Background: Integrating science, technology, engineering and mathematics (STEM) in elementary classrooms has gained more attention with the current educational reforms. In this integration, finding ways to improve STEM knowledge and develop appropriate learning activities, and instructional strategies have been a challenge for educators. Although the similarities between gifted and engineering education have been emphasized, they have been not fully considered. Purpose: This study attempted to show how STEM knowledge appears in elementary gifted students’ planning, constructing, and reflecting phases of “Bridge Construction” activity. This study also aimed to investigate the occurrences of engineering habits of mind when gifted students engaged in the activity. Design/method: The current study employed the case study design. The data were collected through design sketches, students’ worksheets, audio and video recordings of the whole process. Results: Findings of this study revealed that gifted students applied STEM disciplinary knowledge to plan, construct and reflect on their bridges considering the constraints of the problem. The properties of shapes and data interpretation (mathematics), stability, balance, and properties of the materials (science) and engineering techniques were apparent in their overall engineering design process. In addition, the findings from the current study revealed that gifted students displayed all aspects of engineering habits of mind when they engaged in engineering-based model eliciting activity. Conclusions: The findings suggest that engineering-based model eliciting activity can be an effective tool to differentiate the instruction for gifted students.

Science teachers as ESD educators: an outdoor ESD model for developing systems thinking skills
Karaarslan, Güliz; Teksöz, Gaye; Department of Elementary Education (2016)
The main purpose of this thesis is to explore how science teachers could become Education for Sustainable Development (ESD) educators. The study was conducted in five stages which are: gap analysis, developing systems thinking skills measurement tools, designing an outdoor ESD course, conducting a pilot study, and conducting the main study. Through gap analysis, systems thinking was found out to be a required competence for science teachers to become ESD educators. In the second stage, twelve systems thinki...
Science teachers’ theory and pedagogy of argumentation in science education: design, implementation, and evaluation of a graduate course through educational design research
Özdem Yılmaz, Yasemin; Çakıroğlu, Jale; Ertepınar, Hamide; Department of Elementary Education (2014)
The current study is an educational design research on the design, implementation and evaluation of a graduate course that is aimed at improving science teachers’ theory and pedagogy of argumentation in science education. It was aimed to describe the educational design process of a graduate course with a reflexive approach. In addition to the design process, the science teachers’ instructional practices in argumentation based lessons were explored in the study. The participants were 1 elementary school scie...
Investigation of Science Teachers' Professional Development Needs for Learning in Science Centers
KÖSEOĞLU, FİTNAT; Tahancalıo, Semra; KANLI, UYGAR; ÖZDEM YILMAZ, YASEMİN (Turkish Education Association, 2020-01-01)
Science centers are one of the out-of-school learning environments in science education that have been increasing in numbers in recent years. Due to their importance for increasing both science-society communications and the quality of the education in schools, science centers are one of the focal points for the research conducted in out-of-school learning context. The study of science teaching in the field of science centers in Turkey is mostly confined to the schools or visitors' opinions about individual...
STEM Education as a Concept Borrowing Issue: Perspectives of School Administrators in Turkey
Kulakoğlu, Büşra; Kondakci, Yasar (2022-06-01)
Purpose:As a borrowed concept, science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM) education holds limited relevance in many country contexts. This study investigates how school administrators in Turkey view STEM education from three dimensions: (a) their understanding of STEM education, (b) their experiences of STEM implementations, and (c) their perception of their roles in STEM implementation.Design/Approach/Methods:This phenomenological study analyzes the perceptions of school principals working in...
Virtual Environments for Learning: The Design Model
Tokel, Saniye Tuğba (2007-06-28)
In this presentation, we will describe a project recently funded by the National Science Foundation to develop Virtual Environments for Learning (VELs) for middle school science. VELs are designed to engage students in student-directed inquiry within the context of a complex task. All resources students need to address the task, including virtual scientific tools and scaled versions of information technologies, are contained within the environment. Design guidelines with examples drawn from two VELs will be...
