Sürdürülebilir ulaşımın temel bileşenlerinden biri olan trafik güvenliği, dünyada olduğu gibi ülkemizde de uzun vadeli strateji ve politikaların önemli bir odağı haline gelmiş olup, gerek ulusal gerekse de yerel düzeyde önlemlerin alınabilmesi açısından birçok çalışma yürütülmektedir. Son yıllarda, Trafik Güvenliği Platformu stratejileri dahilinde, trafik güvenliği konusunda farkındalığın oluşturulması amacıyla üniversite çalışanları ve öğrencilerine yönelik faaliyetler gerçekleştirilmekte olup, üniversiteler kampüslerinin trafik güvenliği sağlanmış alanlar haline getirilmeleri amacıyla üniversitelerde kurumsal trafik güvenliği politikalarını ve iç denetim prosedürleri kapsayan rehberlerin oluşturulması hedeflenmektedir. Bu kapsamda Yüksek Öğrenim Kurulu (YÖK) ile işbirliği içerisinde bütün üniversitelerde trafik bilincinin geliştirilmesinin sağlanması hedeflenmektedir. Orta Doğu Teknik Üniversitesi (ODTÜ) sürdürülebilir ulaşım ilkeleri doğrultusunda 2014-2015 öğretim yılı içerisinde “ODTÜ Kampüs ve Ulaşım Anketi” çalışması iki aşamada yapılmış ve toplamda 623 katılımcıya erişilmiştir. Trafik güvenliği, katılımcıların çoğu tarafından sürdürülebilir ulaşımın çok önemli bir unsuru olarak belirtilmiş, çalışma sonucunda katılımcılar genel anlamda kampüsü trafik açısından güvenli bulurken, güvenliği olumsuz etkileyen gerek sürücü gerekse de yayalar tarafından gerçekleştirilen bazı davranışların kampüs içerisinde gözlendiği tespit edilmiştir. Yapılan analizler sonucunda literatürde görüldüğü gibi cinsiyete göre trafik güvenliği değerlendirmelerinde farklılıklar olduğu saptanmıştır Ayrıca, kampüs içinde aktif olarak araç kullanan katılımcılar ile aktif olarak araç kullanmayan katılımcılar arasında da verilen cevaplarda farklılıklar olduğu belirlenmişti
