The Karakaya Complex, which lies within the pre-Liassic basement of the Sakarya Composite Terrane extending on a belt from the Biga Peninsula to northeastern Anatolia, comprises various types of volcanic rocks whose ages, origins and geochemical features have been interpreted in different ways. The geochemical data acquired from the previous studies on these volcanic rocks are here re-evaluated in order to unravel the petrology and geochemistry of the Karakaya Complex. The tectonic discrimination diagrams based on the relatively immobile elements indicate that the volcanic rocks within the Karakaya Complex constitute three main groups. These are alkali basalts, subalkali basalts and transitional basalts between alkali and sub-alkali basalts. In the tectonomagmatic discrimination diagrams, these basic volcanic rocks display mostly a within-plate affinity, although a small portion reflects midoceanic ridge and island arc characteristics. In spite of the geodynamic interpretations that have been suggested so far, there is no consensus on the tectonic settings. This is mainly due to insufficient rare-earth element data and limited correlation. Thus a detailed geochemical discrimination and reliable geodynamic interpretation should be based on a better assessment of the ages of different volcanic rocks from different subunits of the Sakarya Composite Terrane and on more detailed geochemical data including rare earth elements and isotopes

Geochemical characteristics of the basic volcanic rocks within the Karakaya complex: A review Karakaya karmaşigı içerisindeki bazik volkanitlerin jeokimyasal özelliklerinin yeniden deǧerlendirilmesi
Mafik litolojiler genelde ab+akt+klrt+ep mineral ...
The Karakaya Complex: A review of data and concepts
Okay, AI; Göncüoğlu, Mehmet Cemal (2004-05-01)
The Karakaya Complex in the Pontides consists of highly deformed and partly metamorphosed clastic and volcanic series of Permian and Triassic age. It is generally subdivided into two parts: The structurally lower part, called the Lower Karakaya Complex, consists of a mafic lava-mafic pyroclastite-shale-limestone succession metamorphosed in the greenschist and blueschist facies during the Late Palaeozoic or Triassic. The structurally upper part is made up of highly deformed Permian and Triassic clastic, volc...
Post-late cretaceous rotational evolution of neotethyan sutures around Ankara region
Özkaptan, Murat; Kaymakcı, Nuretdin; Özacar, Atilla Arda; Department of Geological Engineering (2016)
The central Anatolia comprises various continental fragments belonging to Laurasia at the north and Gondwana at the south. These amalgamated continental fragments (micro continents) delineated by ophiolitic remnants of Tethyan oceanic lithosphere which were consumed due to ~N to S convergence. Around Haymana Basin the closure of the Neotethys Oceans lead to amalgamation of the Pontides (Laurasian affinity) in the north, Tauride and Kırşehir blocks (Gondwana affinity) in the south. The main purpose of this s...
Neotethyan tectonostratigraphic evolution of SE Anatolian basin, Türkiye
Tuncer, Mustafa; Nuretdin, Kaymakcı; Department of Geological Engineering (2023-1-25)
The SE Anatolian basin constitutes the northern margin of the Arabian Plate in SE Türkiye and contains a continuous sedimentary succession from the pre-Cambrian to the recent. It has evolved mainly into four tectonic phases, the first phase includes the Pre-Cambrian to Permian continental platform stage that constitutes the core sequences of the Arabian platform and is represented by continental to shallow marine, and deep marine deposits, the second phase includes Triassic to Jurassic rift- drift sta...
