Engineering is a discipline in STEM, an educational approach that consists of Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics. Engineering applications are favoured in Turkey according to 2017 Science curriculum to improve students’ 21st century skills. To integrate engineering applications to Turkish Science curriculum efficiently, we must understand students’ conceptions of engineering. This study was done to understand middle school students’ conceptions of engineering. Total 75 students from 2 public schools, 43 female and 32 male who are 25 of each 6th, 7th and 8th grade were applied “Draw-An-Engineer-Test(DAET)”. DAET is a research tool for examining students’ conceptions by interpreting their drawn and written reflections. Some outstanding results show male students do not consider engineering as career for women while female students think that engineering is a profession for both genders, students have tendency to civil engineering, and as grade gets higher the conception of engineering is getting narrow

STEM Education as a Concept Borrowing Issue: Perspectives of School Administrators in Turkey
Kulakoğlu, Büşra; Kondakci, Yasar (2022-06-01)
Purpose:As a borrowed concept, science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM) education holds limited relevance in many country contexts. This study investigates how school administrators in Turkey view STEM education from three dimensions: (a) their understanding of STEM education, (b) their experiences of STEM implementations, and (c) their perception of their roles in STEM implementation.Design/Approach/Methods:This phenomenological study analyzes the perceptions of school principals working in...
Development of a mobile robot platform to be used in mobile robot research
Gönüllü, Muhammet Kasım; Koku, Ahmet Buğra; Konukseven, Erhan İlhan; Department of Mechanical Engineering (2013)
Robotics is an interdisciplinary subject and combines mechanical, computer and electrical engineering components together to solve different kinds of problems. In order to build robotic systems, these disciplines should be integrated. Therefore, mobile robots can be used as a tool in education for teaching engineering concepts. They can be employed to be used in undergraduate, graduate and doctorate research. Hands on experience on a mobile robot increase motivation of the students on the topic and give the...
Computational networks and systems - homogenization of variational problems on micro-architectured networks and devices
Kropat, Erik; Meyer-Nieberg, Silja; Weber, Gerhard Wilhelm (2019-05-04)
Networked materials and micro-architectured systems gain increasingly importance in multi-scale physics and engineering sciences. Typically, computational intractable microscopic models have to be applied to capture the physical processes and numerous transmission conditions at singularities, interfaces and borders. The topology of the periodic microstructure governs the effective behaviour of such networked systems. A mathematical concept for the analysis of microscopic models on extremely large periodic n...
Development of Preservice Science Teachers' Pedagogical Content Knowledge for Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics in the context of Lesson Study
Güler Nalbantoğlu, Fulden; Çakıroğlu, Jale; Yılmaz Tüzün, Özgül; Department of Elementary Education (2023-2)
The purpose of the present study was to investigate the development of preservice science teachers’ pedagogical content knowledge for science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM) education in the context of lesson study. The lesson study was integrated into the Practice Teaching in Science course, and there were four lesson study cycles throughout the study. Each lesson study cycle consisted of planning, teaching, reflecting, re-teaching, and re-reflecting phases. The design of the study was a m...
Evaluating mobile apps for STEM education with in-service teachers
Tantu, Özlem; Baran, Evrim; Department of Educational Sciences (2017)
The purpose of the study was to investigate the perceptions of in-service teachers on mobile app evaluation for STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics) education. This multi-method research was carried out through interviews with 10 teachers from K-12 schools who were experienced in STEM education and versed in educational mobile app use. Participants included one high school physics teacher, five elementary science teachers, and four information and computer technology teachers from both p...
