FORAMINIFERAL ASSEMBLAGES AND MICROFACIES ANALYSIS OF UPPER TRIASSIC VOLCANO-SEDIMENTARY SUCCESSIONS IN PALU REGION (ELAZIĞ, TURKEY)

This study focuses on the Upper Triassic recrystallized limestone units alternating with volcanic rocks at southeastern parts of the Elazığ village (eastern Turkey). The Upper Triassic successions are mainly consists of recrystallized limestones particularly rich in benthic foraminifera, megalodonts, and algae. Comprehensive microfacies analysis and faunal assemblages have been commenced throughout the studied sections. The micropaleontological analysis highlights foraminiferal assemblages, dominated by theinvolutinids, lagenids, and textularids. The Triasina hantkenibiozone has been established based by the presence of an index species of the late Noriyen-Rhaetian interval. The stratigraphic range of this zone is defined by the range of the key species aslate Norian-Rhaetian. In addition to eponymous species, Aulotortus sinuosus, Aulotortusfriedli, Involutinasp., Galeanellasp., Duostominasp., Glomospirasp., Glomospirellasp., Duotaxisbirmanica, Siphovalvulinasp., and Reophaxsp. are the other foraminiferal taxa recorded in the Upper Triassic carbonates. Based on the detailed microfacies analysis, the Upper Triassic carbonates of the section are represented by the following microfacies typesrepresenting shallow marine environments:mudstone, wackestone-packstone, pelloidal bioclastic packstone-grainstone. These defined microfacies types are characteristics of the subtidal and intertidal deposits. Alternating volcanic rocks are mainly alkaline basalts with aphanitic texture. They have P-MORB affinities with enrichment of light rare earth elements over heavy rare earth elements and would be originated from garnet bearing mantle source.
