Most of the time, accidents happened in mining operations such as drilling, transportation, excavation, and supporting operations. Moreover, underground mining operations have restrictions and hazards. Indeed, lack of oxygen, severe heat, thirst and starvation are some great events when miners trapped in mining accidents. Thus, refuge provides a secure location for workers in accidents, which can solve these problems. These rooms located on specific position and out fitted them with peculiar devices. However, refuges afford enough time for rescue team to save miners who trapped in mining accidents. This paper presents design of refuges of Hashoni coal mine which is located in Kerman, Iran. Six refuges designed, which provides safe work environments in Hashoni coal mine. Thus, all of refuges layout, sizes, external devices and number of miners which refuge contains them, will be explained. Financial concept of this project shows that initial cost is around 225 to 380 U.S $ for manufacturing of refuges in Hashoni coal mine. Manufacture of refuges will reduce the investment of these tools to 50 percent. Fire accidents in mines decrease the volume of oxygen, and because of fire some toxic gases are also produced. Thus fresh air must be available. Air provided by air supply respirator, which is called Self Breathing Apparatus contained. Aim of this paper is to promote the safety in mining industry.

Analysis and modelling for risk management for underground coal mines’ safety
Eratak, Özlem Deniz; Karpuz, Celal; Department of Mining Engineering (2014)
Safety in underground coal mining has become an important issue because of increasing number of accidents. There are many different hazards may cause these accidents and the most efficient method for coping with risks is the use of risk management techniques. In this thesis, accident data including workday losses, age of the injured, organ affected by accident, season, shift and reason of the accident was collected from TKI mines (ELI- Soma Eynez and GLI Tuncbilek) and TTK mines. Those variables were initia...
Risk assessment by fault tree analysis of methane explosions in Turkish hard coal enterprises underground mines
Mevsim, Rıdvan; Demirel, Nuray; Department of Mining Engineering (2016)
Mining is one of the most hazardous industries in the world. Among all mining professions, underground coal mining has the highest occupational accident and disease rates. Methane explosion appears as the major accident type which results in severe loss of life and property in underground coal mining. Including underground coal mines, preparing a practicable risk assessment is the primary step to sustain a safe workplace environment. The main objective of this study is to specify the root causes of methane ...
A Quantitative risk assessment methodology for occupational accidents in underground coal mines: a case of Turkish hard coal enterprises
Erdoğan, Hasan Hüseyin; Düzgün, H. Şebnem; Kestel, Sevtap Ayşe; Department of Mining Engineering (2016)
Underground coal mining is one of the most dangerous occupations throughout the world. The incidence of injuries and the days lost due to accidents in underground coal mines are much greater than industrial average. In general, the reasons behind an underground occupational accident are too complex to analyze. The risk analysis and assessment is the most suitable method to cope with these type of issues. This study proposes a quantitative methodology for the analysis and assessment of risks associated with ...
Review of Trend Tests for Detection of Wear Out Period for Mining Machineries
Gölbaşı, Onur; Demirel, Nuray (2015-04-17)
Machinery systems are extensively utilized in all mining stages from beginning to end of ore production. They are capital-intensive systems and substantial amount of money is spent annually to keep their functionalities in desired levels. Therefore, implementation of effective maintenance strategy has a vital importance to prevent unexpected breakdowns due to failures and to minimize operational cost. These maintenance strategies can be constituted effectively regarding functional and structural dependencie...
Development of a new methodology for path optimization of underground mine haul roads using evolutionary algorithms
Yardımcı, Ahmet Güneş; Karpuz, Celal; Department of Aerospace Engineering (2018)
The main haul road serves as an access route for men, equipment, transportation of extracted ore and ventilation air in underground mines. Initial capital investment and operating cost parameters are affected by the haul road path. However, the most common method to design a main haul road is to rely on the provisions of skilled mine design experts. Contrary to the simple underground mine layouts, determination of the optimum path without violating navigability constraints in complex underground networks ma...
