Bu araştırma, kentlerde sürdürülebilir topluluk gelişiminin önemini vurgulamayı amaçlamaktadır. Sürdürülebilir topluluk, neredeyse bir yüzyıldan beri tartışılagelen ancak 1980’lerle birlikte kent planlama kuram ve pratiğinin içinde ‘sürdürülebilir gelişme’ bağlamında gündemimize tekrar giren bir kavramdır. Uluslararası deneyim ve yazınla karşılaştırıldığında, Türkiye’de bu kavram oldukça yenidir. Türkiye’de sürdürülebilir topluluk gelişimi üzerine oldukça az araştırma bulunmaktadır; bu da bu konu bağlamındaki bilgimizdeki önemli bir boşluğa işaret etmektedir. Bu bildiri, sürdürülebilir topluluk kavramını Türkiye’de banliyö gelişimi bağlamında irdelemektedir. Araştırma, öncelikle, banliyö alanlarında sürdürülebilir topluluk bileşenlerini ve özelliklerini tanımlamaktır. Bu amaçla Ankara’nın önemli bir banliyö alanı olan ve güney-batı koridorunda gelişen Ümitköy çalışma alanı olarak seçilmiş ve bu alanda sürdürülebilir topluluk bileşenleri değerlendirilmiştir. Alan araştırması bulguları, banliyö gelişiminde, topluluk katılımıyla desteklenen, sürdürülebilirlik ölçütlerine dayalı bütünleşik bir planlama yaklaşımına ve arazi kullanım kararlarına ihtiyaç olduğunu göstermektedir.
