The mission adaptive wings aim to overcome the inefficient behaviour of the classical fixed wings, especially for the off-design conditions, by changing their geometry actively to adopt to changing flight conditions for maximized performance. This study presents the structural design, analysis and experimental modal testing of an unmanned aerial vehicle wing having mission adaptive characteristics.

Experimental analysis of 3-D sweeping wings
Çakır, Hasan; Kurtuluş, Dilek Funda; Department of Aerospace Engineering (2015)
The aim of this thesis is to modify the mechanism, which is capable of mimicking the insect flight and developed previously by the Aerospace Engineering Department, and to measure the forces and moments of three types of flapping wings fixed to this mechanism. The flapping wing design is a new research topic, comparably young area and can be the future for micro unmanned air vehicles. Time varying force and moment data obtained from the experiments conducted in water as part of this thesis can be used to de...
Design of an LPV Based Fractional Controller for the Vibration Suppression of a Smart Beam
Onat, Cem; Şahin, Melin; Yaman, Yavuz; Eswar, Prasad; Saılu, Nemana (2011-12-01)
One of the major problems encountered in the active vibration control of aircraft wings is the changing mass due to the in-flight fuel consumption. In this study, a Linear Parameter Varying (LPV) based fractional controller is designed for the suppression of the flexural vibrations of a smart beam. The designed controller is sensitive to the varying mass properties. The smart beam studied was a cantilever aluminium beam with eight surface bonded Lead-Zirconate-Titanate (PZT) patches. The smart beam was exci...
Accurate position control of a flapping-wing robot enabling free-flight flow visualisation in a wind tunnel
Karasek, Matej; Perçin, Mustafa; Cunis, Torbjorn; van Oudheusden, Bas W.; De Wagter, Christophe; Remes, Bart D. W.; de Croon, Guido C. H. E. (SAGE Publications, 2019-10-02)
Flow visualisations are essential to better understand the unsteady aerodynamics of flapping wing flight. The issues inherent to animal experiments, such as poor controllability and unnatural flapping when tethered, can be avoided by using robotic flyers that promise for a more systematic and repeatable methodology. Here, we present a new flapping-wing micro air vehicle (FWMAV)-specific control approach that, by employing an external motion tracking system, achieved autonomous wind tunnel flight with a maxi...
Aerodynamic modeling and parameter estimation of a quadrotor helicopter
Kaya, Derya; Kutay, Ali Türker (2014-01-01)
This study focuses on aerodynamic modeling of a quadrotor helicopter and the estimation of the model parameters in wind tunnel tests for hover, vertical climb, and forward flight conditions. The motion of a quadrotor is mainly affected by the aerodynamic forces and moments generated by rotors. Accurate calculation of rotor loads is essential for high fidelity simulation of a quadrotor. Momentum and blade element theories are used to obtain expressions for rotor forces and moments for a traveling vehicle. Th...
Experimental investigation of tip anhedral effects on the aerodynamics of a model helicopter rotor in hover
Uluocak, Sinem; Perçin, Mustafa; Uzol, Oğuz (2021-06-01)
This study experimentally investigates the effects of tip anhedral on the rotor aerodynamic performance and the tip vortex characteristics in hovering flight. A five-bladed scaled helicopter rotor with blades that have either rectangular (baseline) or anhedral tip geometries was used as the experimental model. Thrust and torque measurements were performed at the tip Mach numbers (Mtip) of 0.3 and 0.4 at five different pitch angles. In addition, flow field measurements via phase-locked particle image velocim...
