The purpose of this study was to validate a Teacher Beliefs Survey (TBS). The TBS has been developed to measure teachers’ beliefs of constructivist and traditional approaches to teaching and learning (Woolley, Benjamin, & Woolley, 2004). The TBS contains 34 items in four dimensions, namely, Traditional Teaching, Constructivist Teaching, Traditional Management, and Constructivist Parent. Data were collected from 411 preservice elementary science and mathematics teachers in Turkey. Our analysis revealed a reasonable model with four-factor structures. The final model included 19 items. Our indexes are parallel with Woolley et al.’s (2004) findings. The goodness of fit statistics were 2 = 516.28, df = 146, NFI = .78, NNFI = .80, CFI = .83, GFI = .90, AGFI = .84, RMSEA = .08. We also investigated the relationships among teachers’ self-efficacy and their beliefs of the constructivist and the traditional approaches to teaching and learning.

Preservice Elementary Teachers' Attitudes and Self-efficacy Beliefs toward Mathematics
Çakıroğlu, Erdinç; Işıksal Bostan, Mine (2009-01-01)
The purpose of this study was to explore the effect of gender and grade level on preservice teachers' self-efficacy beliefs and attitudes toward mathematics. The analysis was based on 358 elementary and middle school mathematics teachers enrolled in an undergraduate program at two public universities in Ankara. Results showed that there was no significant effect of gender and grade level of preservice teachers on their attitudes toward mathematics. On the other hand, results also revealed that there was fou...
Student evaluation of instruction: comparison between in-class and online methods
Çapa Aydın, Yeşim (Informa UK Limited, 2014-12-4)
This study compares student evaluations of instruction that were collected in-class with those gathered through an online survey. The two modes of administration were compared with respect to response rate, psychometric characteristics and mean ratings through different statistical analyses. Findings indicated that in-class evaluations produced a significantly higher response rate than online evaluation. In addition, Rasch analysis showed that mean ratings obtained in in-class evaluation were significantly ...
Relating Elementary School Students' Socioeconomic Status (SES) and Gender to Their Epistemological Beliefs and Metacognitive Skills: An International Perspective
Yılmaz Tüzün, Özgül (null; 2007-04-09)
The purpose of this study was to relate elementary school students SES and gender to their epistemological beliefs and metacognitive skills. The surveys were administered to 315 students enrolled in 4th and 5th grades and 626 students enrolled in 6th through 8th grades of seven elementary schools located in urban and rural regions of Ankara. According to explanatory factor analysis results, four factors were determined as innate ability, quick learning, simple knowledge, and certain knowledge for the 4th a...
Pre-service science teachers’ perceptions of socioscientific issues: global warming as a case
Al, Saliha; Yılmaz Tüzün, Özgül; Department of Elementary Science and Mathematics Education (2015)
The purpose of this study was to investigate pre-service science teachers perceptions of socio-scientific issues. A total of 18 pre-service science teachers voluntarily participated in this study. To evaluate pre-service science teachers perceptions of socio-scientific issues, semi-structured interview protocol was designed. In the first part of the study, participants general perceptions of science, technology, and science-society-technology interaction was examined. In the second part of the study, one of...
Assessment of preservice mathematics teachers’ knowledge for teaching statistics
Mercimek, Oktay; Erbaş, Ayhan Kürşat; Department of Secondary Science and Mathematics Education (2013)
The purpose of this study is to assess preservice teachers’ mathematical knowledge for teaching statistics (MKT-S). For this purpose, MKT-S instrument consisting of two dimensions, ‘content knowledge’ (CK) and ‘pedagogical content knowledge’ (PCK) was developed, and applied to 659 preservice middle school mathematics teachers (PTs). Confirmatory factor analysis showed that CK and PCK are two different dimensions of mathematical knowledge of teaching statistics. It was found that CK factor scores were highly...
