The importance of end user participation within the development of a design for building improvement is accepted and recognised. It is nonetheless a significant challenge to select the best approach for the engagement of users to produce effective design process contribution. This paper assesses the suitability of early stage qualitative end user engagement in enabling the design process. In particular, the paper reports on the case application of this early stage approach to make design decisions, in the Faculty of Architecture Building at the Middle East Technical University, Ankara, Turkey. Initial semi-structured individual end user interviews were carried out along with group interviews, to qualitatively assess the priorities for a retrofit scheme of works. Utilising qualitative textual analysis software, specific elements to consider in the retrofit design process are defined, along with particular areas in need of focus, to best enhance user experience and energy efficiency gains. Using a case study approach, this research looks to highlight key elements of successful early design end user engagement, utilised to promote successful project completion. Findings highlight that retrofit project end users require engagement to aid articulation of requirements, along with the utilisation of engagement strategies to promote project buy in.

Involving end users in retrofit of higher education buildings
Gooding, Luke; Erdogan, Bilge; Gürsel Dino, İpek (2021-12-01)
Although the importance of end user participation during building improvement design is widely accepted, selecting the best approach for the engagement of users in design processes is a significant challenge. This paper assesses how qualitative end user engagement during retrofit planning can aid the design process of energy retrofits in higher education institutions. The application of this early stage approach to make design decisions is presented via a case study, carried out in the Faculty of Architectu...
A usability evaluation framework and a case study on a supplier portal system
Babayiğit, Elif Fatma; Şen, Tayyar; Department of Industrial Engineering (2003)
The goal of this thesis is to provide a usability evaluation framework in the area of e-procurement technologies and a case study on this base. A survey of the concepts of human computer interaction, usability and usability evaluation techniques is carried out. Additionally current e-procurement technologies are explored and specifically a Company̕s Supplier Portal System which was employed in year 2003, as an e-procurement technology for the procurement of direct goods, is taken into consideration. Pointin...
A Proposed information systems framework for effective delivery of user research findings
Töre Yargın, Gülşen (2011-06-25)
Integration of user research findings into product design process is a well-received issue. There is a tremendous research on how to conduct user research and methodologies for generating user data. However delivering that information effectively is as important as the quality of data generated through user research, since if it is not delivered effectively the impact that is demanded by the product developers would not be achieved. Therefore the requirements for the deliverables should be conceptualized be...
Effective Communicatıon Of User Research Outcomes In Design For Well-Being: Adaptation Of The Design Well-Being Matrix In A Pregnancy Case
Günay, Aslı (Middle East Technical University, Faculty of Architecture, 2020-6-30)
Effective communication of user research deliverables plays a crucial role during all design processes to effectively and meaningfully inform design decisions. As newly introduced materials, such as frameworks and tools, in emergent fields are actually mediums for communicating information in different phases of research, effective communication of them would foster the development of a shared and established language, and thus, robust progression of these fields. This paper investigates effective communica...
Ethics for industrial design : an ethico-political critique of sustaninability in industrial design
Şişman, Osman; Kurtgözü, Aren Emre; Department of Industrial Design (2005)
This thesis analyses the concept of sustainability as applied and reflected in industrial design practice in a theoretical way. The discourses on sustainability in general are explored in terms of ecology, economics and politics. The underlying motives resulting in unsustainable ways of production and consumption practices are attempted to be located in contemporary society.
