In this study, an experimental set-up for testing chevron type gasketed plate heat exchangers is utilized to investigate the thermal and hydraulic characteristics of different plate geometries. The experiments can be performed using various number of plates and wide range of plate sizes. The experiments are carried out for different temperatures, flow rates, and number of plates so that the Reynolds numbers (300-5250) and Prandtl numbers varies for all plates that have 30 degrees of chevron angle. Correlations are derived for Nusselt number and friction factor by using the experimental results.

Development of A Computer Program for The Numerical Investigation of Heat Transfer in A Gasketed Plate Heat Exchanger
Sert, İsmail Ozan; Sezer Uzol, Nilay; Güvenç Yazıcıoğlu, Almıla; Kakaç, Sadık (null; 2010-07-14)
In this study, a computer program is developed to calculate characteristics of a Chevron type gasketed plate heat exchanger (CTGPHEX) such as: the number of plates, the effective surface area and total pressure drops. The main reason to prefer the use of CTGPHEXs to other various types of heat exchangers is that the heat transfer efficiency is much higher in comparison. Working conditions such as the flow rates and inlet and outlet temperature of both flow sides and plate design parameters are used as an in...
EXPERIMENTAL INVESTIGATION AND PERFORMANCE ANALYSIS OF GASKETED-PLATE HEAT EXCHANGERS
Akturk, Fatih; Sezer Uzol, Nilay; Aradag, Selin; Kakac, Sadik (2015-01-01)
In this study, the thermal and hydrodynamic performance analyses of sa elected gasketed-plate heat exchanger with different number of plates are performed experimentally. A gasketed-plate heat exchanger (GPHE) test set-up is designed and constructed to perform experimental measurements for thermal and hydrodynamic performance analyses of plate heat exchangers. The experiments are performed for an industrial chevron-type plate heat exchanger under different flow conditions for a wide range of Reynolds number...
Improving flow structure and natural convection within fin spacings of plate fin heat sinks
Özet, Mehmet Erdem; Tarı, İlker; Department of Mechanical Engineering (2015)
The main objectives of this thesis are to numerically investigate the previously observed recirculation zones and longitudinal vortices that occur in low fin height plate finned horizontal heat sinks and to improve the flow structures and heat transfer in these zones using various approaches with the help of simulations performed using commercially available CFD software. The approaches used for improvements are replacing the outer most fins with higher ones, introducing gaps on the length of the fins in va...
Experimental Investigation of Effusion and Film Cooling for Gas Turbine Combustor
İnanlı, Sinan; Yasa, Tolga; Ulaş, Abdullah (2016-07-12)
Experimental study was conducted to understand the heat transfer characteristics of film or effusion cooled test plates that represent the gas turbine combustor liner. Two effusion cooling test plates having different hole angles (30 and 75° with horizontal) were used. Film cooling tests were conducted by six different slot geometries. Test geometries were the scaled-up model of real combustor liner. Three different blowing ratios were applied for each test plate geometry. Surface cooling effectiveness was ...
Experimental investigation and 3D finite element prediction of the white layer thickness, heat affected zone, and surface roughness in EDM process
Shabgard, Mohammadreza; Oliaei, Samad Nadimi Bavil; Seyedzavvar, Mirsadegh; Najadebrahimi, Ahmad (2011-12-01)
An axisymmetric three-dimensional model or temperature distribution in the electrical discharge machining process has been developed using the finite element method to estimate the surface integrity characteristics of AISI H13 tool steel as workpiece. White layer thickness, depth of heat affected zone, and arithmetical mean roughness consisting of the studied surface integrity features on which the effect of process parameters, including pulse on-time and pulse current were investigated. Additionally, the e...
