The purposes of the present study were to investigate the relationships among pre-service science teachers’ informal reasoning on SSI, their epistemological beliefs and metacognitive awareness and to investigate the predictors for their informal reasoning on SSI regarding their epistemological beliefs and metacognitive awareness. A total of 674 pre-service science teachers enrolled in the elementary science education department of Education Faculties of 3 public universities located in the Ankara, the capital city of an eastern country participated in the study. The Open- ended Questionnaire developed by Wu and Tsai (2010) for assessing informal reasoning on SSI, Schommer’s Epistemological Questionnaire developed by Schommer (1990), and Metacognitive Awareness Inventory developed by Schraw and Dennison (1994) were used. Results of the study revealed that there are correlations among pre-service science teachers’ informal reasoning quality and most of their metacognitive awareness subdimensions. Also, there is a negative and significant correlation among pre-service science teachers’ certain knowledge and counterargument construction. Metacognitive awareness subdimensions of information management strategies and declarative knowledge were the best predictors for pre-service science teachers’ informal reasoning quality.

Preservice science teachers SSI teaching self-efficacy beliefs
Öztürk, Nilay; Yılmaz Tüzün, Özgül; Çakıroğlu, Jale (null; 2017-05-21)
The main aim of the present study is to investigate nature of PSTs’ SSI teaching self-efficacy beliefs. The participants were 52 senior preservice science teachers (PSTs). The data were collected by utilizing SSI Teaching Self-Efficacy Beliefs Instrument and open-ended questions administered during the Science Technology Society (STS) course. The results revealed that PSTs’ had moderate levels of SSI teaching selfefficacy beliefs. Moreover, PSTs reported many challenges they encountered while preparing an S...
Preservice Science Teachers' Epistemological Beliefs and Informal Reasoning Regarding Socioscientific Issues
Ozturk, Nilay; Yılmaz Tüzün, Özgül (2017-12-01)
This study investigated preservice elementary science teachers' (PSTs) informal reasoning regarding socioscientific issues (SSI), their epistemological beliefs, and the relationship between informal reasoning and epistemological beliefs. From several SSIs, nuclear power usage was selected for this study. A total of 647 Turkish PSTs enrolled in three large universities in Turkey completed the open-ended questionnaire, which assessed the participants' informal reasoning about the target SSI, and Schommer's (1...
Middle Scool Students' Informal Reasoning Quality, Attitudes Towards Socioscientific Issues and Motivation to Learn Science
Manay, Büşra; Yılmaz Tüzün, Özgül; Department of Secondary Science and Mathematics Education (2022-12-2)
The aim of the present study was investigating the relationship between students’ informal reasoning quality regarding socio-scientific issues (SSI), attitudes toward SSI and their motivation to learn science. Data were obtained by using Informal Reasoning on SSI questionnaire, Pupils’ Attitudes Towards Socio-scientific Issues (PASSI) and Students’ Motivation toward Science Learning (SMTSL). The participants were 523 middle school students in 7th and 8th grades in Artuklu district of Mardin. Correlational ...
Elementary Students’ Scientific Epistemological Beliefs in Relation to Socio-Economic Status and Gender
Özkal, Kudret; Öztekin, Ceren; Sungur, Semra; Çakıroğlu, Jale; Çakıroğlu, Erdinç (2010-01-01)
This study investigated students' scientific epistemological beliefs in relation to socio-economic status (SES) and gender. Data were obtained from 1,152 eight grade Turkish elementary school students using Scientific Epistemological Beliefs instrument. Canonical correlation analysis indicated that students with a working mother and educated parents as well as greater number of books at home together with a separate study room are more likely to have tentative views and less likely to have fixed views about...
Pre-service science teachers perceptions and practices related to history of science instructions
Hacıeminoğlu, Esme; Ertepınar, Hamide; Yılmaz Tüzün, Özgül (2012-01-01)
The purposes of this study were to describe pre-service science teachers’(PTs) perceptions and practices about using history of science(HOS) in their instructions and their experiences as in-service teachers(ITs) and to determine the relationship between PTs perceptions and practices about using HOS in their classrooms. The HOS Instructional Survey was administered to 68 PTs in two different universities in Turkey. After these students had graduated, some questions were asked about their views about practic...
