Tsunami Hazard Assessment on the Egyptian Coast of the Mediterranean
Zaytsev, A. I.; Babeyko, A. Yu.; Kurkin, A. A.; Yalçıner, Ahmet Cevdet; Pelinovsky, E. N. (Pleiades Publishing Ltd, 2019-09-01)
Tsunami forecast possibilities for areas with a small base of historical tsunamis have been discussed using the Probabilistic Tsunami Hazard Assessment (PTHA) method, which is based on a statistical analysis of a sufficiently large number of real and predictive earthquakes with a subsequent calculation of possible tsunami waves. This method has been used for a long-term tsunami hazard assessment on the Mediterranean coast of Egypt. The predicted wave heights have been shown to vary along the coastline due t...

Tsunami Induced Sedimentation in Ports A Case Study in Haydarpasa Harbor Marmara Sea
Kıan, Rozıta; Velioğlu, Deniz; Yalçıner, Ahmet Cevdet; Zaytsev, Andrey (null; 2015-12-14)
The movement of sea bottom or ground sediment material by tsunami cause erosion, deposition and hence bathymetry and topogrphy changes. The unexpected depth decrease at some parts of the enclosed basins and harbors may result in lack of movements of vessels. In order to understand the sediment movement inside the enclosed basins, Haydarpasa port in the sea of Marama is selected as a case study to understand the motion of tsunamis inside the port and identify their effects on harbor functions. The highest po...
Tsunami hazard in the Eastern Mediterranean and its connected seas: Toward a Tsunami warning center in Turkey
MERAL ÖZEL, NURCAN; Ocal, Necmioglu; Cevdet, Yalciner Ahmet; Dogan, Kalafat; Mustafa, Erdik (Elsevier BV, 2011-04-01)
Tsunami mitigation, preparedness and early warning initiatives have begun at the global scale only after the tragic event of Sumatra in 2004. Turkey, as a country with a history of devastating earthquakes, has been also affected by tsunamis in its past. In this paper we present the Tsunami Hazard in the Eastern Mediterranean and its connected seas (Aegean, Marmara and Black Sea) by providing detailed information on historically and instrumentally recorded significant tsunamigenic events surrounding Turkey, ...
Tsunami hazards associated with explosion-collapse processes of a dome complex on Minoan Thera
Minoura, K; Imamura, E; Kuran, U; Nakamura, T; Papadopoulos, GA; Takahashi, T; Yalçıner, Ahmet Cevdet (2003-01-01)
The Minoan Thera eruption of the Bronze Age is the most significant Aegean explosive volcanism. The eruption resulted in caldera collapse. We studied the Minoan volcano-tectonic event from the viewpoint of sedimentology and hydraulics. On the Aegean Sea coast of Turkey and Crete we found traces of tsunamis. The tsunami layers are overlain by felsic tephra. The mineralogical characteristics of volcanic tephra and AMS radiocarbon dating on foraminiferal tests show that the tsunami layers are correlative to th...
