Rock slopes can cause severe failures and they are crucial in characterizing rock masses realistically in order to overcome natural hazards. Mudurnu County, which is settled in a steep valley presents a case for regional rock instability problems. Instabilities of rock masses along the valley are triggered by topography, weathering, man-made and earthquake activities. Discontinuous limestone located at the west side of the Mudurnu valley is susceptible to complex kinematic failures resulting from the combination of kinematic failure (i.e., planar, wedge, toppling). These instabilities tend to create important hazard zones and generate regional risk. The purpose of this study is to define the possible modes of failure for discontinuous limestone units along the valley. However, many problematic locations are inaccessible due to the quite wide and highly steep nature of the valley. In order to overcome this problem, unmanned aerial vehicles (UAV) have been used and digital images of the valley were scanned. Later, these images have been compared with the information gained by the scan-line field studies and have been used to define the mode of failure and zones along the valley. Consequently, the west side of the valley has been examined and remediation measurement studies have been proposed.

Assessment of kinematic rock slope failures in Mudurnu Valley, Turkey
Arslan Kelam, Arzu; Akgün, Haluk (2021-09-06)
Slope instabilities are one of the most frequent natural hazards capable of causing severe failures both at regional and large scales. Mudurnu, which is settled on a steep valley, is affected by regional rock slope instabilities. These instabilities constitute a hazard and create an important risk to the community since they threaten human lives, settlement areas, and historically-important structures. In order to minimize the hazard and risk associated with slope instabilities, rock masses along the valley...
Assessment of cut slope stability in western Black Sea Region (Turkey)
Özköse, Merve; Topal, Tamer; Department of Geological Engineering (2019)
Cut slopes are intensely prone to weathering in the cause of excavation effects. Weathering effects can reduce strength of rocks and results in instabilities in the long run. By the reasons of rocks containing joints, fractures, faults, bedding planes and pore spaces, they are likely to be weathered because of wetting-drying cycles, climate changes, and chemical action of solutions absorbed. This study is mainly concerned with the slope stability analysis for sixteen permanent cut slopes that are composed o...
Evaluation of scouring reliability at bridge abutments
Yanmaz, Ali Melih (2012-04-26)
Serious scouring may take place around bridge abutments during floods, which can lead to considerable damage or structural collapse. Design of abutment footings must, therefore, rely on the estimation of maximum possible depth of scour through the bridge opening. Deterministic scour-prediction equations are based on simplified assumptions and they do not account for randomness of the scouring variables, which leads to an unavoidable risk in footing design. This study is concerned with the development of a n...
Prediction of failure mode in weak rock slopes using fuzzy slope mass rating
Yardımcı, Ahmet Güneş; Karpuz, Celal (null; 2020-01-01)
Stability of weak rock slopes are threatened by structurally controlled mechanisms or mass failure. Shallow depth lignite beds are commonly exploited by surface mining. Preliminary slope stability analysis is carried out by practical tools that perform quick stability investigation with limited data. Kinematical analysis is a widely used method that requires orientational data and the rock mass friction angle. However, geological or mechanical features of the rock mass are disregarded. Slope Mass Rating (SM...
Assessment of seismic soil liquefaction triggering beneath building foundation systems
Çetin, Kemal Önder; Jeremic, Boris (2012-12-01)
Although there exist some consensus on seismic soil liquefaction assessment of free field level soil sites, estimating liquefaction triggering potential beneath foundations still stays as a controversial and difficult issue. Assessing liquefaction triggering potential under mat foundations requires the estimation of cyclic and static stresses and the state of the soil medium. As part of these studies, conventionally used normalized cyclic demand term, cyclic stress ratio, is to be estimated addressing the s...
