The aim of this study was to examine 6-8th grade students’ performances when they were asked to identify, name, and draw geometrical objects. In order to investigate students’ geometrical structures, van Hiele theory was employed with the help of a model developed by Gutierrez et al. (1991, 1998). The data was collected from 809 6th to 8th grade middle school students in Ankara, Turkey. The analysis of the data revealed that most of the students had difficulty to think 3 dimensionally, and so to reach 1 st van Hiele level with complete acquisition. The findings are discussed and implications for educational field are presented.

An investigation of seventh grade students’ computational estimation strategies and factors associated with them
Boz, Burçak; Bulut, Safure; Department of Secondary Science and Mathematics Education (2009)
The purpose of this study was to identify seventh grade students’ computational estimation strategies and factors associated with these strategies. A case study was conducted with five students. They were selected among 116 seventh grade students from a public elementary school in Aegean region. Two sessions of clinical interviews were carried out with each participant. In the first interview session, the Computational Estimation Test, which was consisted of 15 estimation questions, was administered to stud...
A Study on Investigating 8th Grade Students' Reasoning Skills on Measurement: The Case of Cylinder
Işıksal Bostan, Mine; Osmanoglu, Aslihan (2010-04-01)
The purpose of this study was to investigate 8th grade students' reasoning skills on measurement. Specifically, this study aimed to find students' reasoning skills on the case of surface area and volume of a cylinder. The data were collected from 271 8th grade elementary school students enrolled in three public and two private schools in Ankara at the end of 2008 spring semester. In order to investigate the elementary students' reasoning skills regarding the area and volume of a cylinder, the Cylinder Explo...
A Study on Investigating Eight Grade Students' Reasoning Skills on Measurement: The Case of Cylinder
Işıksal Bostan, Mine; Osmanoğlu, Aslıhan (2010-01-01)
The purpose of this study was to investigate 81 grade students' reasoning skills on measurement. Specifically, in case of surface area and volume of a cylinder. The data were collected from 271 eight grade elementary school students enrolled in three public and two private schools in Ankara at the end of 2008 spring semester. In order to investigate the elementary students' reasoning skills regarding the area and volume of a cylinder, the Cylinder Exploration Task (CET, Merseth, 2003) was administered as th...
An investigation of the effect of inquiry-based instruction enriched with origami activities on the 7th grade students’ reflection symmetry achievement, attitudes towards geometry and self-efficacy in geometry
Kandil, Semanur; Işıksal Bostan, Mine; Department of Elementary Science and Mathematics Education (2016)
The purpose of the study is to investigate the effect of inquiry-based instruction enriched with origami activities on the 7th grade students’ reflection symmetry achievement, attitudes towards geometry and self-efficacy in geometry. The study was conducted during the academic year 2015-2016 and lasted 15 class hours in three weeks. The sample was consisted of 48 seventh grade students in a public middle school in Altındağ district of Ankara. Two classes, instructed by the researcher, were randomly assigned...
An investigation of the effect of origami-based instruction on elementary students’ spatial ability in mathematics
Çakmak, Sedanur; Işıksal Bostan, Mine; Department of Elementary Science and Mathematics Education (2009)
The main purpose of the study was to investigate the effect of origami-based instruction on fourth, fifth, and sixth grade students’ spatial ability in mathematics. More specifically, how origami-based instruction affected students’ spatial visualization and spatial orientation ability was examined. In addition, elementary students’ self-reported perceptions related to origami-based instruction was investigated. In other words, students’ attitude towards origami-based instruction, their views about the bene...
