Mobile robot navigation: Implementing the GVG in the presence of sharp corners
Konukseven, Erhan İlhan (1996-01-01)
A robot can explore an unknown environment by incrementally constructing a roadmap of that environment using line of sight sensor information. Recall that a roadmap is a one-dimensional representation of a robot's environment. This paper addresses one problem that occurs while generating a roadmap: what happens when sonar sensors cannot detect sharp objects because of the specularities? To do this, a new sensor model is combined with an already existing incremental construction procedure for a roadmap. Expe...
Airport runway detection in satellite images by Adaboost Learning
ZÖNGÜR, Ugur; Halıcı, Uğur; AYTEKİN, Orsan; Ulusoy, İlkay (2009-09-03)
Advances in hardware and pattern recognition techniques, along with the widespread utilization of remote sensing satellites, have urged the development of automatic target detection systems in satellite images. Automatic detection of airports is particularly essential, due to the strategic importance of these targets. In this paper, a runway detection method using a segmentation process based on textural properties is proposed for the detection of airport runways, which is the most distinguishing element of...
Automated Detection of Arbitrarily Shaped Buildings in Complex Environments From Monocular VHR Optical Satellite Imagery
Ok, Ali Ozgun; Senaras, Caglar; Yuksel, Baris (2013-03-01)
This paper introduces a new approach for the automated detection of buildings from monocular very high resolution (VHR) optical satellite images. First, we investigate the shadow evidence to focus on building regions. To do that, we propose a new fuzzy landscape generation approach to model the directional spatial relationship between buildings and their shadows. Once all landscapes are collected, a pruning process is developed to eliminate the landscapes that may occur due to non-building objects. The fina...
URBAN BUILDING DETECTION FROM OPTICAL AND INSAR FEATURES EXPLOITING CONTEXT
Wegner, J. D.; Ok, Ahmet; Thiele, A.; Rottensteiner, F.; Soergel, U. (2010-09-03)
We investigate the potential of combined features of aerial images and high-resolution interferometric SAR (InSAR) data for building detection in urban areas. It is shown that completeness and correctness may be increased if we integrate both InSAR double-bounce lines and 3D lines of stereo data in addition to building hints of a single optical orthophoto. In order to exploit context information, which is crucial for object detection in urban areas, we use a Conditional Random Field approach. It proves to b...
Panel-Method-Based Path Planning and Collaborative Target Tracking for Swarming Micro Air Vehicles
Uzol, Oğuz; Yavrucuk, İlkay (American Institute of Aeronautics and Astronautics (AIAA), 2010-03-01)
This paper presents an application of the potential field panel method commonly used in aerodynamics analysis to obtain streamlinelike trajectories and use them for path planning and collaborative target tracking for swarming micro air vehicles in an urban environment filled with complex shaped buildings and other architectural structures. In addition, we introduce a performance matching technique that relates the flu id velocities, which are obtained as a part of the panel method solution, to vehicle veloc...
