Corpora annotated at the discourse level can help theoretical advancements and are ultimately inputs to various language technology tasks. The Penn Discourse TreeBank (PDTB) is a richly-annotated resource for discourse relations in English (Prasad, et al. 2014). It has already been used reliably for annotating discourse in various languages such as Hindi (Oza, et al., 2009), Chinese (Zhou & Xue, 2015), and Turkish (Zeyrek, et al. 2013). This talk will introduce a new multilingual discourse annotation effort, an initiative undertaken by a group of scholars within Textlink, annotating discourse in the PDTB style. Different from the monolingual corpora, TED Multilingual Discourse Bank, or TED-MDB involves the parallel annotation of a subset of TED talks in six languages — English, Turkish, European Portuguese, Polish, German and Russian. It annotates both explicit and implicit discourse relations at the inter-sentential level, focusing on explicit relations at the intra-sentential level. I will describe our on-going work on the corpus, and discuss the benefits and challenges involved in creating it.

Momentum transfer continuum between preshape and grasping based on fluidics
Özyer, Barış; Erkmen, İsmet; Erkmen, Aydan Müşerref; Department of Electrical and Electronics Engineering (2012)
This dissertation propose a new fluidics based framework to determine a continuum between preshaping and grasping so as to appropriately preshape a multi-fingered robot hand for creating an optimal initialization of grasp. The continuum of a hand preshape closing upon an object that creates an initial object motion tendency of the object based on the impact moment patterns generated from the fingers is presented. These motion tendencies should then be suitable for the proper initiation of the grasping task....
Presentation of a multi-tone model and its application to feedforward circuit analysis
Coskun, Hakan; Mutlu, Ahmet; Demir, Şimşek (2004-12-01)
Analytical tools that characterize nonlinear systems are essential and need to be developed for initial rapid optimizations and understanding of the system performance. Modeling of the input signal is a crucial part of this task. In this work, we present a multi-tone representation for an arbitrary, stochastically not well-defined signal and its application to a feedforward circuit which involve two nonlinear amplifiers, couplers, phase and delay units. Particularly, amplitude and phase aspects of the model...
Collaborative and Cognitive Network Platforms: Vision and Research Challenges
Onur, Ertan; Hawas, Mohamed Gamal; de Groot, Sonia Marcela Heemstra; Niemegeers, Ignas G. M. M. (Springer Science and Business Media LLC, 2011-05-01)
In this paper, we present a visionary concept referred to as Collaborative and Cognitive Network Platforms (CCNPs) as a future-proof solution for creating a dependable, self-organizing and self-managing communication substrate for effective ICT solutions to societal problems. CCNP creates a cooperative communication platform to support critical services across a range of business sectors. CCNP is based on the personal network (PN) technology which is an inherently cooperative environment prototyped in the D...
EROSION OF BASINS OF ATTRACTION - PERFORMANCE LOSSES IN SENSORIMOTOR LEARNING OF A ROBOT MANIPULATOR
UNERI, M; Erkmen, Aydan Müşerref (1992-08-13)
The sensorimotor learning phase is considered in the context of a collision-free dynamic path planning architecture for a robot manipulator in an uncertain task environment. The robot dynamics are effected by a vector field generated by partially known attractors and repellers, with uncertainty represented by entropy measures. The joint space is transformed into a cell space, and sensor uncertainty is taken proportional to cell size. The authors use a cell-to-cell mapping concept to develop a simple cell ma...
