Determination of rotor slot number of an induction motor using an external search coil

2009-12-01
This paper describes determination of the number rotor slots of an induction motor from the induced emf in an external search coil. This information is needed in prediction of motor speed from the external search coil induced voltage. The approach is based on identifying saliency harmonics and rotor slot harmonics, via FFT analysis of the external search coil emf. The proposed approach is tested on an induction motor driven by the mains supply. The experiments are repeated with a PWM supply. It is shown that the method works well in both cases and the number of rotor slots of the test machine is accurattely predicted.

Özlü Ertan, Hatice Gülçin; Colak, Baris (2007-05-05)
This paper describes a novel approach for offline stator leakage inductance and online stator resistance estimation that can be used for self-tuning of induction motor drives. The paper briefly describes the theory behind the approach. The proposed methods are experimentally tested on an industrial induction motor and also tested on a washing machine motor designed for variable speed operation. Test results are given and the robustness of the approach is illustrated.
Calculation of parameters of single-phase PM motor for design optimization
Ertan, Hulusi Bülent; Capolino, GA (2005-09-01)
This paper presents methods of calculation of parameters of single-phase permanent-magnet (SPPM) motor, in terms of motor dimensions and material properties, which are utilized in the dynamic model of the motor. The intention of the study is to develop means of SPPM performance calculations, which lend themselves to be employed within a mathematical design optimization approach. The calculated parameters are compared with measured values and are shown to be accurate for the purpose of the study.
Prediction of motor speed for low cost induction motor drives
Özlü Ertan, Hatice Gülçin (2006-05-19)
In this paper speed estimation methods for low cost, variable frequency induction motor drives are investigated. Such methods are required to minimize the computational effort and show little parameter dependence. Existing methods have limitations regarding the speed range or are applicable only if the motor size is such that certain requirements are met. Two methods described in the literature are considered. Three new methods of speed estimation are developed to improve their performance. The model used f...
Detection of some parameters of induction motors a proposal and its verification
Özlü Ertan, Hatice Gülçin; Colak, Baris (2007-11-30)
This paper describes a novel approach for offline stator leakage inductance estimation method that can be used for self-tuning of induction motor drives. The paper briefly describes the theory behind the approach. The proposed method is based on applying a DC voltage to the motor windings and measuring the DC current that flows in the circuit over a short interval of time. The measured variables are DC quantities and relatively noise free as compared to some other available methods. The proposed approach is...
Implementation of a vector controlled induction motor drive
Acar, Akın; Ertan, Hulusi Bülent; Department of Electrical and Electronics Engineering (2004)
High dynamic performance, which is obtained from dc motors, became achievable from induction motors with the recent advances in power semiconductors, digital signal processors and development in control techniques. By using field oriented control, torque and flux of the induction motors can be controlled independently as in dc motors. The control performance of field oriented induction motor drive greatly depends on the correct stator flux estimation. In this thesis voltage model is used for the flux estima...
