This paper discusses basic principles of Structural Health Monitoring (SHM), how it has evolved and current state-of-the-art. The need for monitoring is categorized under main titles of necessity for SHM. The toolbox of monitoring projects share similar sensors. Most commonly used sensors and their working principles are briefly discussed. The duration of measurement and outcomes obtained from short and long term monitoring are elaborated. Dynamic and static measurements sometimes need to be combined for the maximum gain from monitoring studies. Advanced tools like modal analysis, acoustic emission, ultrasonic pulse velocity, eddy current, NDT techniques are covered in principle. The variety of structure types that are suitable for monitoring are listed and discussed. The conclusions summarizes the past, present, and future of SHM and its applications

Design of a Novel THz Sensor for Structural Health Monitoring Applications
Pavia, J. P.; Ribeiro, M. A.; Sarikaya, C. K.; Akbar, D.; Altan, Hakan; Souto, N. (2019-01-01)
In this paper, we propose a study on the characterization, design and simulation of a THz sensor for applications in Structural Health Monitoring (SHM). The proposed sensor is assembled using two frequency selective surfaces (FSSs) based on metamaterial wire resonators. We present a theoretical model to describe its electromagnetics which is used not only to understand the physical principles underlying the functioning of the sensor but also to determine a set of optimized parameters for its operation in th...
An Electromagnetic Sensing System Incorporating Multiple Probes and Single Antenna for Wireless Structural Health Monitoring
Ozbey, Burak; ALTINTAŞ, AYHAN; DEMİR, Hilmi Volkan; ERTÜRK, VAKUR BEHÇET; Kurç, Özgür (2017-03-24)
In this study, a wireless and passive displacement/strain sensing system is proposed for structural health monitoring (SHM). The wireless and passive interrogation of the sensing unit [a variant of a nested split-ring resonator (NSRR)] is achieved through the near-field interaction and electromagnetic coupling between the single antenna in the system and the multiple sensors called the NSRR probes. It is demonstrated that the system can acquire data from more than one NSRR probe simultaneously in a real-lif...
Load rating of concrete-deck-on-steel-stringer bridges using field-calibrated 2D-grid models
Türer, Ahmet (Elsevier BV, 2011-04-01)
This paper presents and discusses issues related to structural identification, calibrated model-based load rating, and sensitivity of rating to the analytical model, along with experimental studies conducted on an existing concrete-deck-on-steel-stringer bridge. The proposed model-updating procedure uses collected dynamic data (mode shapes, modal frequencies, and order of modes) as well as static deformed shape information. Two-dimensional (2D) grid models were developed to successfully simulate the transve...
Steel hysteretic damper featuring displacement dependent hardening for seismic protection of structures
Dicleli, Murat (2014-11-26)
In this paper, a summary of analytical and experimental studies into the behavior of a new hysteretic damper, designed for seismic protection of structures is presented. The Multi-directional Torsional Hysteretic Damper (MTHD) is a recently-patented invention in which a symmetrical arrangement of identical cylindrical steel cores is so configured as to yield in torsion while the structure experiences planar movements due to earthquake shakings. The new device has certain desirable properties. Notably, it is...
Testing and analysis of different hold down devices for CFS construction
Pehlivan, Barış Mert; Baran, Eray; Topkaya, Cem (Elsevier BV, 2018-06-01)
This paper summarizes the findings of a two-phase study on hold down devices used in cold formed steel (CFS) structural systems. The first phase consisted of component testing and numerical analysis of hold down devices while the second phase was based on testing of CFS framed sheathed wall panels under cyclic lateral loading. Eleven monotonic and three cyclic tensile load tests were performed on seven different types of hold down devices to assess the performance of readily available hold downs and propose...
