Computer Solutions of Plane Strain Axisymmetric Thermomechanical Problems

2005-08-01
A simple computational model is developed to estimate elastic, elastic-plastic, fully plastic, and residual stress states in generalized plane strain axisymmetric structures considering temperature dependent physical properties as well as nonlinear isotropic strain hardening. Using the von Mises yield criterion, total deformation theory and a Swift-type nonlinear hardening law, a single nonlinear differential equation governing thermoelastoplastic behavior is obtained. A shooting technique using Newton iterations with numerically approximated tangents is used for the computer solution of the governing equation. Various numerical examples including plane strain and generalized plane strain problems for cylinders and tubes are handled. It is shown that the thermoelostoplastic response of the structures considered here is affected significantly by the temperature dependency of the physical properties of the material; the effect of nonlinear strain hardening, however, is observed to be not as great as the latter.

Analytical Solution of Nonlinear Strain Hardening Preheated Pressure Tube
Eraslan, Ahmet Nedim (2008-01-01)
The analytical solution of a nonlinear strain hardening preheated tube subjected to internal pressure is presented. A state of generalized plane strain, small deformations, and temperature gradients are assumed. The analytical plastic model is based on the incremental theory of plasticity, Tresca´s yield criterion, its associated flow rule, and a Swift-type nonlinear hardening law. Solutions for linearly hardening and perfectly plastic materials are also presented.
Elastic-plastic deformation of a rotating solid disk of exponentially varying thickness
Eraslan, Ahmet Nedim (2002-07-01)
The elastic-plastic deformation of a rotating solid disk of variable thickness in exponential form is investigated using Tresca's yield criterion, its associated flow rule and linear strain hardening. An analytical solution is obtained and numerical results are presented for different values of the geometric parameters. In the limiting case of uniform thickness the solution reduces to Garner's solution.
Von mises yield criterion and nonlinearly hardening variable thickness rotating annular disks with rigid inclusion
Eraslan, Ahmet Nedim (2002-09-01)
A computational model is developed to investigate inelastic deformations of variable thickness rotating annular disks mounted on rigid shafts. The von Mises yield condition and its flow rule are combined with Swift's hardening law to simulate nonlinear hardening material behavior. An efficient numerical solution procedure is designed and used throughout to handle the nonlinearities associated with the von Mises yield condition and the boundary condition at the shaft-annular disk interface. The results of th...
Numerical modelling and finite element analysis of stress wave propagation for ultrasonic pulse velocity testing of concrete
Yaman, İsmail Özgür; Aktan, Haluk (2006-12-01)
Stress wave propagation through concrete is simulated by finite element analysis. The concrete medium is modeled as a homogeneous material with smeared properties to investigate and establish the suitable finite element analysis method (explicit versus implicit) and analysis parameters (element size, and solution time increment) also suitable for rigorous investigation. In the next step, finite element analysis model of the medium is developed using a digital image processing technique, which distinguishes ...
Thermal fracture analysis of orthotropic functionally graded materials using an equivalent domain integral approach
Dağ, Serkan (2006-12-01)
A new computational method based on the equivalent domain integral (EDI) is developed for mode I fracture analysis of orthotropic functionally graded materials (FGMs) subjected to thermal stresses. By using the constitutive relations of plane orthotropic thermoelasticity, generalized definition of the J-integral is converted to an equivalent domain integral to calculate the thermal stress intensity factor. In the formulation of the EDI approach, all the required thermomechanical properties are assumed to ha...
